Inside the Role

The Manufacturing Engineering Department at Detroit Diesel is responsible for planning the implementation of new products, equipment, and processes for our Power system production lines. In the Assembly Process Engineer role, you will work with local & international partners to successfully design & implement new processes as well as bringing continuous improvements to existing lines. You will be working with a team of other Manufacturing engineers but will also have opportunities to interact with other groups focused on Operations, Quality, Maintenance, Finance and etc. This role also has responsibility for maintaining labor time standards and bill of material to ensure current documentation and inventory tracking. What You Drive at DTNA

• Designs, develops, and implements new or revised processes for assembling the component parts and subassemblies required for a finished product.
• Designs the sequence of assembly operations and the arrangement of equipment for automatic parts selection, fastening, joining, measurement, labeling, sorting, and packaging.
• Performs detail‑oriented evaluations of process requirements and advanced assembly system architectures.
• Executes in‑depth analysis of manufacturing processes and highly complex assembly systems to support optimization and quality assurance.
• Monitors the rate of assembly and finished goods inventory to identify and resolve issues impacting achievement of cost, quality, or production targets.
• Performs quality inspections and functional tests on assembled goods.
• Provide inputs for process-oriented design (PoD) or design for manufacturing to ensure ease of manual assembly where necessary.
• Responsible for routing parts for Bill of Materials and maintaining labor routings in our ERP system.
• Responsible for supporting local Change Management activities by reviewing proposed changes, providing impact statements, and implementing changes once approved.
• Organize and conduct shop floor meetings to discuss upcoming process changes with the affected production areas.
• Identify and incorporate Ergonomics & Safety standards to assembly processes.
• Perform time studies using TiCons, cycle time checks etc. to balance work between stations
• Create and maintain Process Master Data in PTSI and relevant systems required for production
• Must maintain regular communication and collaboration with the global ME team.
• Must be able to professionally represent ME and actively participate in global Change Management.
• Understand and assist in leading the design and development of systems and continuous improvements.
• Able to apply process and standards to systems with some guidance
• With some guidance is able to promote continuous improvements and implement in projects
• Understand product design changes and those impacts to the production process.  Assist in suggesting and implementing product or process design modifications, where applicable and make process, tooling, fixtures, or assembly recommendations, including time and ergonomic estimates as part of the review process.

Knowledge You Should Bring

• Bachelor’s degree in industrial, mechanical engineering or equivalent area with 2-4 years of related experience.
• Experience with Engine, Axle, Transmissions or similar products
• Experience working on project teams alongside different functional groups
• Basic knowledge of process documentation and how it is used – Control Plans, Work Instructions, PFMEA, etc.
• Basic knowledge of performing time studies or calculating standard time using pre-determined time systems – TiCons etc.
• With assistance, if needed, able to provide layout, tooling, methods and material handling technical solutions to assembly issues.
• With assistance, if needed, must be able to provide support to Operations, Quality and other functional groups on request.
• Knowledge of standard hand tools for assembly
• Ability to identify basic problems and procedural irregularities, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
• Base knowledge of AutoCAD or similar systems
• Must be able to travel domestically or International based on project needs
• Must be able to articulate technical information in written and oral communication
• Must be proficient in Microsoft Office software

Preferred Skills & Experience:

• Process development using MTM (or other Pre-determined Time System)
• Heavy Duty and Medium Duty Engine Product Knowledge (including Assembly processes)
• Understanding of CVDS/FRAMe schedules for Projects
• Experience with SISAM NG Software or similar system
• Experience with PTSI or similar SAP ERP software system
• Experience with Ticon Software (MTM Time Study system)
• Knowledge of Lean System Principles.
• Knowledge of MBN, OSHA, and DIN standards
• Knowledge with process modifications, improvements, and waste elimination   
• Experience in identifying new line or assembly concepts, and creating relevant pro-con analysis
• Certification in a pre-determined time system (MTM, MODapts, MOST, etc.)    
• Experience with 3D model systems – accessing and interpreting data      
• Knowledge of plant system architecture
