PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The city of Aurora's Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) Department's mission is to encourage active lifestyles and create healthy environments for people, nature and community.
The award-winning operation consists of seven divisions (Golf, Open Space and Natural Resources, Parks Operations, Planning, Design and Construction, Recreation, Business Services and Communications) that collectively manage more than 8,000 acres of open space, 100+ parks, 180+ athletic fields, over 100 miles of trails, three nature centers, two reservoirs, five recreation centers, five golf courses, indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities and one of Colorado's largest municipal urban forestry programs.

The hiring rate for this role is $30.00/hour.
This is classified as VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee), where the selected candidate will work less than 29 hours per week. This position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act.

Position Overview

The City of Aurora is looking for a dynamic Personal Trainer to design tailored exercise programs, guide individuals and small groups, and deliver engaging instruction across our recreation facilities. Plan, design and lead personal training clients through exercise for the City of Aurora’s recreation division.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for creating own exercise program based on needs of clients with varying levels of fitness on an individual basis and a small group setting
- Conduct assessments and make recommendations for improvements to client health and wellbeing
- Communicate effectively with client(s) and Fitness Specialist
- Possess knowledge of fitness equipment and appropriate use
- Keep up with the new trends of fitness and remain current on certifications
- Modify exercise plans based on needs, potential injuries or health issues
- Oversee the use of fitness equipment to ensure clients exercise properly and safely
- Perform minor first aid and respond to emergencies if needed
- Effectively motivate participants and clients
- Perform additional duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Education:
High School Diploma; degree in Kinesiology or Sports Science preferred
Experience:
At least 1 year of experience teaching fitness classes/personal training.
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of diverse exercises and how to adjust plans according to each client’s needs
- Ability to instruct and motivate people
Abilities:
- Instruct and motivate group fitness participants
- Maintain a safe environment
- Excellent communication skills
- Teamwork
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- Personal Trainer/Group Fitness Instructor from accredited institution
- CPR/AED certification
WORKING CONDITIONS
Essential Personnel:
When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
Physical Demands:
- Medium work that involves moving no more than 50 pounds at a time
- Frequent lifting, carrying, walking and standing
- May require frequent pushing, pulling, bending and stooping.
- Teaching of fitness classes as scheduled.
Work Environment:
- Works primarily indoors but may work outdoors assisting with a program or outreach events in varying weather conditions
Equipment Used:
- Uses standard office equipment including personal computer and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel and menu driven databases as a part of the Library automated systems
- This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
- Knowledge of fitness equipment and accessories.
The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
