Overview

The Lead Storeroom Technician serves as a key operational leader within Supply Chain, supporting the efficient receipt, storage, distribution, and inventory management of supplies and equipment throughout the organization. This position is responsible for coordinating daily workflow, maintaining inventory control processes, ensuring regulatory and safety compliance, and supporting uninterrupted supply chain operations that directly impact patient care.

The Lead Storeroom Technician acts as a subject matter expert and resource for staff, providing training, mentorship, and guidance on departmental procedures and inventory management systems, including oversight of the WaveMark two-bin inventory system. Working collaboratively with the Storeroom Manager, Inventory Control Specialist, Nursing Leadership, vendors, and other stakeholders, this role helps optimize inventory processes, improve operational efficiencies, and ensure appropriate product availability across all patient care areas.

In the absence of the Storeroom Manager, the Lead Storeroom Technician assumes responsibility for overseeing daily operations, workflow coordination, and schedule management. The role also supports emergency preparedness efforts by responding to Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) activations, supply shortages, backorders, severe weather events, and other situations requiring critical supply chain support.

This position requires strong organizational, leadership, customer service, and problem-solving skills, as well as a commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement. The incumbent will have access to both legend and non-legend medications and is responsible for maintaining the highest standards of medication security, storage, accountability, and regulatory compliance to protect product integrity and prevent diversion. The Lead Storeroom Technician also participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational objectives.

 

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

• Plans, prioritizes, and organizes workflow to maximize productivity while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, regulatory compliance, and customer service.
• Supports the development, implementation, and monitoring of process improvement initiatives, taking corrective action as needed to improve departmental performance.
• Ensures team members adhere to departmental policies, procedures, quality standards, safety requirements, and applicable regulatory and accreditation guidelines.
• Monitors regulatory and accreditation compliance activities and assists in addressing identified deficiencies and implementing corrective actions.
• Trains, mentors, and supports new and existing team members, students, and department users; ensures orientation, training checklists, competency assessments, and mandatory education requirements are completed and documented.
• Provides leadership with performance-related feedback, including recognition, coaching opportunities, corrective actions, and disciplinary recommendations, while assisting with annual and introductory performance evaluations.
• Assists in developing departmental training programs, educational initiatives, quality improvement projects, and safety programs.
• Serves as a subject matter expert and resource for daily department operations, providing technical guidance and sharing knowledge to support team success.
• Participates in the recruitment and interview process and provides feedback regarding candidate qualifications and selection recommendations.
• Conducts routine audits of exchange carts, par-level storage areas, and inventory supplies to ensure accuracy, proper stock rotation, expiration control, and inventory integrity.
• Maintains operational support systems for patient care areas by monitoring, replenishing, and managing supply inventories accurately and efficiently.
• Ensures adequate inventory levels are maintained to support exchange cart replenishment and departmental supply needs; coordinates procurement of supplies through approved channels as necessary.
• Accurately prepares, processes, and maintains inventory documentation, including stock requisitions, stock returns, inventory adjustments, and charge transactions.
• Picks, stages, and delivers medical supplies and equipment to requesting departments in a timely and accurate manner while following established distribution and storage procedures.
• Maintains organized storage locations, ensures proper product identification and stock rotation, removes expired inventory, and recommends inventory level adjustments to leadership.
• Applies appropriate charge codes to supplies and ensures all chargeable items are properly identified and documented for patient billing purposes.
• Receives incoming shipments, verifies order accuracy, inspects materials for damage or defects, documents discrepancies, and communicates issues to leadership and purchasing personnel.
• Coordinates the disposition and documentation of damaged goods until claims and vendor issues are resolved.
• Processes outbound shipments utilizing approved carriers, including Federal Express, UPS, and other delivery services, while maintaining accurate shipping records and ensuring timely carrier pickup.
• Oversees and maintains the department's two-bin inventory management system, including establishing par levels, updating bin labels, training users, and managing inventory optimization requests.
• Collaborates with the Storeroom Manager and Inventory Control Specialist to improve inventory management processes, efficiency, and overall supply chain performance.
• Serves as the operational lead in the absence of the Storeroom Manager, overseeing daily workflow, scheduling, and departmental operations.
• Enters manual and paper requisitions into the Lawson system when designated personnel are unavailable to ensure continuity of operations.
• Issues, tracks, and documents patient care equipment to ensure accountability and accurate location tracking.
• Assists with cycle counts, inventory audits, and reconciliation activities to maintain inventory accuracy and support financial stewardship.
• Demonstrates flexibility by performing additional duties and providing operational support as required to meet departmental and organizational needs.

Qualifications

• Three years' experience working with patient care supplies and equipment.
• An understanding of the use/purpose of Medical/Surgical supplies and equipment helpful; experience with storage and distribution of supplies.
• Proficient in use and management of Wave mark 2-bin system.
• Five years' experience working with patient care supplies and equipment.
• An understanding of the use/purpose of Medical/Surgical supplies and equipment helpful; experience with storage and distribution of supplies.
• Proficient in use and management of Wave mark 2-bin system.
• Ability to work independently in a quick and professional manner.
• Ability to communicate well and expediently handle needs of all departments is required.
• Excellent computer skills.
