Crescent Energy is seeking an experienced Lead Joint Venture Auditor to join our Houston-based Accounting organization. This position will be responsible for planning, coordinating, conducting, and supporting joint venture audits across Crescent's operated and non-operated asset portfolio. The role will serve as the primary liaison for partner and operator audit activities, including hosting audits of Crescent-operated properties and conducting audits of third-party operators to ensure compliance with Joint Operating Agreements (JOAs), COPAS Accounting Procedures, revenue distribution requirements, and other contractual obligations.

The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of upstream oil and gas accounting and audit experience, including significant experience with COPAS audits, joint interest billing reviews, and revenue audits. This role requires a collaborative professional capable of partnering effectively with Joint Venture Accounting, Revenue Accounting, Production Accounting, Land, Supply Chain, Operations, and Finance teams. The successful candidate will possess strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills, along with the ability to identify, quantify, and resolve audit exceptions while maintaining productive relationships with partners and operators.

Reporting Structure

This position reports to the Operations Accounting Supervisor.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead and conduct audits of non-operated joint ventures, including planning, testing, exception development, reporting, and settlement negotiations.
  • Manage and host partner audits of Crescent-operated properties, serving as the primary point of contact for external auditors and working interest owners.
  • Review joint interest billings (JIBs), revenue distributions, overhead charges, capital expenditures, and operating expenses for compliance with Joint Operating Agreements (JOAs), COPAS Accounting Procedures, and other contractual requirements.
  • Analyze accounting records, source documentation, contracts, AFEs, and supporting schedules to identify audit exceptions, recovery opportunities, and compliance risks.
  • Prepare audit workpapers, reports, exception summaries, and supporting documentation for management review.
  • Coordinate with Joint Venture Accounting, Revenue Accounting, Land, Operations, Supply Chain, and Finance teams to investigate and resolve audit-related matters.
  • Lead settlement discussions with operators and partners to resolve audit findings and recover identified exceptions.
  • Support acquisition, divestiture, and integration activities through audit and due diligence reviews, as needed.
  • Identify opportunities to improve audit processes, strengthen controls, and enhance compliance with contractual obligations.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of upstream oil and gas accounting, joint venture accounting, revenue accounting, audit, or related industry experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading COPAS audits, joint interest billing audits, and revenue audits.
  • Advanced knowledge of Joint Operating Agreements (JOAs), COPAS Accounting Procedures, and oil and gas industry accounting practices.
  • Experience hosting partner audits and conducting audits of third-party operators.
  • Experience developing audit exceptions, negotiating settlements, and driving issues to resolution.
  • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with oil and gas accounting systems and ERP platforms required; SAP experience preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Accredited Petroleum Accountant (APA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), or similar professional designation preferred.
  • Active participation in COPAS or related industry organizations.
  • Experience auditing operated and non-operated assets across multiple basins.
  • Experience supporting acquisition, divestiture, and integration activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage multiple complex audits and competing priorities.
  • Experience identifying and implementing process improvements and control enhancements.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively engage internal and external stakeholders.
