The Laboratory Support Technician (LST II) is part of the provider care team acting in a support capacity for reports, data and scheduling functions of the laboratory. This position is responsible for accurate, timely and effective provision of laboratory support mechanisms. The LST II will be required to exhibit excellent customer service skills in line with the Mercy Signature Service Standards with all customer interactions. The LST II is responsible for the skillful acquisition of all required types of specimens, As required, for laboratory testing utilizing safe, accurate, effective, professional methodologies while observing HIPAA confidentiality requirements and lab policies. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

Position Overview

The Anatomic Pathology Lab Support Technician II (LST II) - PRN is an integral member of the provider care team, serving in a support capacity for laboratory reports, data management, specimen processing, and scheduling functions. This role is responsible for the accurate, timely, and effective provision of laboratory support services while maintaining compliance with laboratory policies, regulatory requirements, and HIPAA confidentiality standards.

The LST II demonstrates exceptional customer service aligned with Mercy's Service Standards and performs specimen collection, labeling, processing, and transfer using safe, accurate, professional methodologies. This position contributes to operational excellence by supporting laboratory workflows, ensuring quality outcomes, and fostering a collaborative environment focused on patient care.

Key Responsibilities

Specimen Collection & Laboratory Support

• Skillfully acquire, label, process, and transfer laboratory specimens according to departmental and regulatory standards.
• Perform specimen referral and processing for laboratory testing using accepted methodologies.
• Support laboratory specialty areas through specimen and report processing as needed.
• Ensure accurate, timely, and confidential handling of all patient information and laboratory results.
• Assist with post-analytical result processing and reporting.
• Resolve laboratory billing issues as assigned.

Operational Excellence

• Organize and prioritize work to meet established turnaround times and productivity expectations.
• Maintain accurate electronic communication and data management practices.
• Create and utilize work aids and reference documents as needed.
• Monitor and communicate operational issues to appropriate stakeholders for resolution.
• Participate in inventory management and supply control activities.
• Assist in training and educating team members as requested.

Customer Service

• Deliver exceptional service to patients, providers, and coworkers in accordance with Mercy Service Standards.
• Communicate professionally and effectively in person, by phone, and through written correspondence.
• Foster positive relationships with all customer groups to support patient service excellence.

Quality & Compliance

• Demonstrate and document competency according to CMS guidelines and Mercy requirements.
• Review and report laboratory test information under the direction of laboratory leadership.
• Communicate critical information according to established policies and procedures.
• Identify and participate in process improvement initiatives.
• Adhere to all safety regulations, including bloodborne pathogen, exposure control, and chemical hygiene requirements.

• Support departmental staffing plans and operational needs.
• Display teamwork, cooperation, and respect toward patients, providers, and coworkers.
• Demonstrate initiative by assisting laboratory and support departments as needed.
• Participate in continuing education and professional development activities.
• Complete all mandatory education requirements on time.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience

• Six (6) months of phlebotomy or clinical laboratory experience required; OR
• Successful completion of a clinical training program.

Additional Requirements

• Must successfully complete applicable facility competencies, including checklists, written examinations, management observations, and other competency assessments.
• Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
• Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
• Basic computer proficiency and data management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in anatomic pathology, laboratory services, specimen processing, or healthcare support environments.
• Experience working in a fast-paced hospital laboratory setting.
• Knowledge of laboratory information systems and electronic medical records.

Continuing Education Requirements

• Complete a minimum of eight (8) continuing education units annually.
• Maintain required competencies and complete all mandatory coursework within established timeframes.
