We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Shepherd to join our team at Waipapa Station, a 3,000-hectare sheep and beef farming block.

Reporting to the Stock Manager, this is a hands-on role where you will assist with the day-to-day management of livestock, mustering, animal health, farm maintenance, and seasonal farming activities. You'll be part of a supportive team environment and have the opportunity to further develop your practical farming skills while contributing to a high-performing farming business.

Role overview

Reporting to and working closely with the Stock Manager, the Shepherd General supports the smooth and efficient running of Waipapa Station. This is a varied, hands-on role contributing to the day-to-day management of livestock, general farm maintenance, and seasonal operations across our dry stock properties.

You will be part of a supportive team with a strong focus on animal welfare, environmental responsibility, farm performance, and long-term stewardship of the land. This fixed-term position offers a valuable opportunity to gain experience within a progressive Māori agribusiness while contributing to the wider dry stock team.

Key responsibilities

  • Daily livestock handling, care, and stock movements
  • Mustering and working with dogs
  • Supporting animal health and welfare programmes
  • Assisting with the implementation of farm plans and seasonal activities
  • General farm maintenance, including fencing and water systems
  • Operating and maintaining farm machinery and equipment
  • Maintaining accurate farm records when required
  • Following health, safety, and environmental standards

About you

We're looking for someone with the right attitude who is keen to learn, eager to contribute, and enjoys working as part of a team.

  • Practical farming experience or a genuine passion for the sheep and beef industry
  • Good stock sense and a strong commitment to animal welfare
  • Working dogs or an interest in developing dog handling skills
  • A positive attitude and willingness to learn
  • A strong work ethic and reliable approach to work
  • The ability to work independently and within a team
  • A restricted or full New Zealand driver's licence
  • Alignment with Waipapa's values of Kaitiakitanga, Pono, Tika, Aroha, and Manawanui
