2027 Summer Intern – Lean Material Strategies / Warehouse Management Systems

Job Description

The Role:

The LMS/WMS Intern will support Lean Material Strategies by analyzing warehouse and material-flow processes, improving WMS data accuracy and standard work, and helping translate operational needs into practical process and system improvements. The intern will work with cross-functional partners to improve inventory visibility, material availability, space utilization, and line-side delivery performance, additional special projects in the safety and technology space will be assigned.

 

The Team: 

The Lean Material Strategies team develops scalable material-handling, warehouse, and digital solutions that support safe, efficient, and reliable manufacturing operations. The team partners with plants, supply chain, manufacturing engineering, and information technology to standardize processes, improve material flow, and enable data-driven decisions through warehouse management system capabilities.

 

What You’ll Do:   

• Map current-state warehouse and material flows, identify waste and process variation, and recommend improvements.
• Analyze WMS/ERP data to identify inventory accuracy, transaction, slotting, replenishment, and material-availability opportunities.
• Develop standard work, process maps, visual management, and dashboards to support sustainable improvements.
• Collaborate with plant operations, logistics, engineering, supply chain, and IT stakeholders to test and implement solutions.
• Potential project: pilot a WMS inventory-accuracy and material-flow visibility improvement at a selected operation by establishing a baseline, identifying root causes, developing a dashboard and countermeasures, and measuring results and/ or project in digitalization, safety and or technology space.

 

Required Qualifications:    

• Pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Operations Management, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or a related field
• Must be graduating between December 2027 and June 2030
• Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week during the summer months
• Must be willing to work in a plant environment and travel to GM manufacturing facilities as needed

 

Preferred Qualifications:   

• Experience with warehouse management systems, enterprise resource planning systems, manufacturing operations, or material-flow processes
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel; familiarity with Power BI, SQL, Visio, or other data-visualization tools
• Knowledge of lean manufacturing, material handling, inventory control, process improvement, or standard work
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and project-management skills
• Ability to work collaboratively with plant operations, engineering, IT, and supply chain teams

Work Arrangement:   

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, MI, three times per week, at minimum or other frequency dictated by the business.

    

GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to eligible students selected for the 2027 Student Program – to help facilitate administration of relocation benefits, please apply using the permanent address you would move from. 

 

Start dates for this internship role are May 24th and June 14th of 2027.
