About the Role
We are seeking a z/OS Mainframe Operator to join our 24×7 Operations team, supporting mission‑critical enterprise systems. This role is responsible for the continuous monitoring, control, and operational support of IBM z/OS mainframe environments, ensuring system availability, stability, and service level objectives are consistently met.
You will work as part of a highly skilled operations team, acting as the first point of response for production events, batch processing issues, and system alerts across multiple environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 24×7 operational support for z/OS mainframe environments across rotating shifts
- Monitor system consoles, automation tools, and hardware/software alerts
- Execute and monitor batch processing and scheduling, ensuring production deadlines are met
- Perform first‑level incident investigation, troubleshooting and recovery for batch, console, and system issues
- Execute job restarts, reruns, holds, and releases in accordance with documented procedures
- Monitor and manage output and report distribution
- Perform system start/stop activities, including scheduled IPLs and planned maintenance tasks
- Maintain accurate incident, change, and operational documentation
- Escalate incidents to specialist support teams in line with operational procedures and SLAs
- Participate in disaster recovery activities and testing exercises
- Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders during incidents and service events
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Experience working in a z/OS mainframe operations or production support environment
- Working knowledge of:
- z/OS, JES2/JES3
- JCL
- TSO/ISPF, SDSF
- Familiarity with at least one enterprise scheduling tool (e.g. Control‑M, CA‑7, IBM Workload Scheduler)
- Experience supporting batch processing in a 24×7 environment
- Understanding of ITIL Incident, Change, and Problem Management practices
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under pressure
Desirable:
- Experience with automation and monitoring tools (e.g. OPS/MVS, NetView)
- Exposure to output management tools (e.g. Control‑D, OMCS)
- Experience supporting regulated or mission‑critical environments (financial, government, utilities)
- Prior experience working on rotating 12‑hour shift rosters
