Job Description

The Role:
The Summer Intern – Manufacturing Engineering - Global Artisan Innovation Center role is designed for an early-career college student who wants hands-on experience bringing vehicle programs, manufacturing processes, tooling, and innovative technologies from concept to reality. GAIC supports unique vehicle builds, pre-production and launch activities, low-volume manufacturing, craftsmanship, tooling, machining, stamping, equipment, quality, and continuous improvement.

As a GAIC intern, you will be assigned to one or more projects based on business needs and your interests. You may work alongside manufacturing engineers, launch engineers, product and design engineers, skilled trades, shop leaders, quality teams, and program management to solve problems and support successful vehicle builds and manufacturing operations.

The Team:
GAIC is a hands-on manufacturing and innovation center that supports vehicle development, validation, launch readiness, low-volume production, and advanced manufacturing activities. The team works across engineering, manufacturing, quality, safety, maintenance, materials, supply chain, and program management to develop and execute solutions that support current and future vehicle programs.

GAIC provides exposure to a broad range of manufacturing activities, including tooling and equipment development, machining, stamping, advanced body joining, robotics, additive manufacturing, virtual assembly, build execution, process improvement, and highly crafted vehicle production. Our goal is to safely deliver high-quality products and build events while developing people, processes, and technologies that strengthen GM’s manufacturing capabilities.

What You’ll Do:

  • Support manufacturing engineering, vehicle build, launch, tooling, equipment, process, quality, or continuous improvement projects.

  • Help translate product designs, specifications, and program requirements into manufacturing-ready processes, tools, equipment, and documentation.

  • Participate in vehicle build planning, build readiness reviews, launch activities, and day-to-day execution as assigned.

  • Work with engineers, designers, skilled trades, operators, suppliers, and cross-functional teams to identify issues and develop practical solutions.

  • Support the design, development, testing, installation, and improvement of manufacturing tools, equipment, fixtures, and processes.

  • Assist with data collection, analysis, problem solving, process evaluation, and waste reduction activities.

  • Help create and maintain planning, timing, standardized work, work instructions, process documentation, visual management, and status reports.

  • Support safety, quality, delivery, cost, and people-focused objectives in an active manufacturing environment.

  • Participate in continuous improvement and Global Manufacturing System activities.

  • Communicate project status, risks, issues, and recommendations to project and functional teams.

  • Demonstrate initiative, creativity, sound engineering judgment, and a willingness to learn in a fast-paced environment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical field, such as manufacturing, mechanical, electrical, industrial, systems, mechatronics, robotics, materials, or related discipline.

  • Must be graduating between December 2027 and June 2029.

  • Able to work full-time, 40 hours per week during the summer months.

  • Must be willing to work in a plant and shop environment.

  • Must be willing to work onsite at the Global Artisan Innovation Center in Warren, Michigan.

What will give you a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Previous internship, co-op, project, research, or hands-on experience in manufacturing, automotive, engineering, robotics, machining, tooling, fabrication, quality, or project management.

  • Experience reading engineering drawings, product data, specifications, or manufacturing documentation.

  • Familiarity with CAD, product lifecycle management, data analysis, or engineering software.

  • Experience with problem-solving methods, process improvement, lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or Global Manufacturing Systems.

  • Strong communication, organization, teamwork, and technical problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work safely and effectively in a hands-on, cross-functional environment.

  • Curiosity about how vehicles, manufacturing processes, tools, and equipment are designed, built, tested, and improved.
