AVP, Supplemental Health Product Management
 

Supplemental Health is a key growth area for The Hartford and a central component of the Employee Benefits strategy. The portfolio includes Critical Illness, Accident, and Hospital Indemnity insurance and has grown from approximately $100 million to $330 million over the past five years. With continued investment in the business, this role offers an opportunity to help shape the next phase of growth and deliver differentiated protection solutions for employers and participants.

The AVP, Supplemental Health Product Management sets the strategy, value proposition, product offering, and end-to-end customer experience for The Hartford's Supplemental Health portfolio. The role shapes growth and financial performance in partnership with leaders across actuarial, underwriting, finance, claims, operations, distribution, marketing, and technology. Reporting to the VP, Product Management, Employee Benefits, this leader manages a seasoned team of four product management professionals and provides broad cross-functional leadership across the Supplemental Health business. This role can be based in any one of our office locations or remotely within the U.S.
 

Responsibilities

Sets Supplemental Health Strategy in Collaboration with the Employee Benefits Senior Leadership Team

  • Owns The Hartford's Supplemental Health product roadmap across Accident, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity, ensuring the portfolio remains relevant and competitive.

  • Develops and executes multi-year strategies to accelerate growth, strengthen differentiation, and drive enrollment.

  • Maintains an external perspective through customer needs, broker feedback, competitor activity, and market trends; brings forward recommendations for innovation and enhancement.

  • Partners with pricing, actuarial, underwriting, and finance leaders to understand product economics and advance profitable growth objectives; the role influences performance but does not directly own the P&L.
     

Leads Product and Customer Innovation

  • Leads product development, enhancement, and integration initiatives from concept through filing, implementation, and market launch.

  • Partners with claims, technology, and operations teams to improve the customer experience, modernize product capabilities, and advance integrated solutions.

  • Uses market research, customer insights, broker input, and analytics to identify opportunities to innovate, increase enrollment, and improve speed to market.
     

Provides Enterprise and Market Leadership

  • Serves as the internal and external face of The Hartford's Supplemental Health portfolio, communicating strategy, capabilities, market perspective, investment needs, and performance.

  • Represents the organization with distribution partners, employers, consultants, industry associations, and brokerage firms.

  • Leads the Supplemental Health cross-functional community of practice and influences priorities across claims, operations, underwriting, actuarial, distribution, technology, and other business areas.
     

Ensures Regulatory and Compliance Excellence

  • Ensures products and supporting operations remain compliant with applicable federal and state regulations.

  • Partners closely with Legal, Compliance, Risk Management, and Government Affairs teams.

Leads and Develops High-Performing Teams

  • Leads, coaches, and develops a seasoned team of four product management professionals.

  • Builds an inclusive, high-performance culture by listening to the team and cross-functional partners, creating alignment, and driving clear decisions and execution.

  • Strengthens organizational capability through mentoring, talent development, and meaningful career opportunities.
     

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of Employee Benefits or insurance industry experience, including direct leadership experience with Supplemental Health product strategy and products such as Accident, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity.

  • Proven strategic product leadership experience, with demonstrated success building and executing strategies that drive growth, innovation, market relevance, and improved customer outcomes.

  • Strong understanding of Supplemental Health product development and management, including pricing, underwriting, enrollment, service, claims, regulatory filing, and go-to-market considerations.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead through influence in a matrixed organization and align cross-functional partners around a shared strategy.

  • Experience bringing new products or meaningful product enhancements from development and filing through implementation and market launch.

  • Financial acumen and the ability to partner effectively with actuarial, finance, pricing, and underwriting leaders.

  • Strong executive communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills, with credibility to represent the business internally and externally.

  • Proven ability to lead and develop experienced product management talent.

  • Experience leading product growth, transformation, integration, or operating model change within a carrier or comparable organization.

  • Deep understanding of voluntary benefits distribution, enrollment ecosystems, broker and customer needs, and the competitive landscape.

  • Experience advancing integrated customer experiences, digital product capabilities, or platform modernization initiatives.

  • Knowledge of state filing requirements and regulatory frameworks impacting Supplemental Health products.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time, with potential for slightly higher travel for candidates outside of Home Office or those who are remotely based.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$180,000 - $270,000
