IMEG is hiring a Survey Crew Chief in Billings, MT to provide leadership in daily survey field crew operations and direct the collection of survey field data for land surveying projects. This role supports boundary surveys, topographic surveys, construction stakeouts, and related field activities while providing survey assistance under the leadership of an Office Coordinator or Senior Crew Chief.
You will help keep field operations moving by maintaining equipment, processing and verifying project data, training field team members, and supporting safe, accurate execution in the field. The team you would join supports residential and land development work, including subdivision feasibility, site support, and boundary and ALTA survey services.

What You'll Do
- Oversee and perform day-to-day field crew operations to collect field data for land surveys, including boundary surveys, topographic surveys, and construction stakeouts
- Direct assigned field team members in acquiring survey field data and completing land surveying field projects
- Operate, maintain, and care for survey equipment, data collection tools, and other geodetic and reality capture equipment
- Transfer files between data collection systems and internal company project folders
- Perform quality checks and process field data
- Download, maintain, and verify the accuracy of project data, reports, and database records
- Maintain professional and productive working relationships with clients and coworkers
- Oversee and train team members in the use of survey equipment, including total station, GPS, levels and data collects for us in the collection of field survey data
- May perform pre-field staking calculations and prepare as-staked cutsheets/deliverables
- Operate a company vehicle and observe safety and security procedures
What You'll Bring
Required
Education
- Associates degree, or certificate, in Land Surveying, Civil Engineering Technology or Civil Engineering preferred
Experience
- 8 years of experience minimum required, 10 preferred, in the construction industry preferred
Required Skills/Abilities
- Advanced knowledge of surveying fundamentals and procedures recognized in the region work is being performed
- Knowledge of modern survey equipment, devices, and methods
- Problem solving techniques
- Knowledge of jurisdictional and industry requirements
- Ability to work in an outdoor environment
- Possesses oral and written communication skills
- Ability to professionally represent IMEG
- Ability to collect field data in an organized, neat and professional manner for boundary, topographic, design and construction stakeout projects
- Valid driver’s license with ability to be insured by IMEG carrier; must consent to a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) background check
- Proficient in Microsoft and MS Office Suite including but not limited to Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Ability to travel with occasional overnight stays
Preferred
- Experience with Trimble, Leica Robotic Total Stations, Data Collectors and GPS preferred
- RPLS/SI preferred but not required
Physical Requirements
- All weather year round outdoor work environment with seasonal conditions including extreme heat index and wind-chill/low temperatures
- Regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, see, hear, and lift objects up to 50 pounds
- Occasionally required to drive, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, reach with hands or arms, and grasp or pull
- Will have exposure to loud noises

- Bozeman-area civil team dominated by residential and subdivision development
- Subgrade inspection, site plans, staking, and subdivision feasibility across Bozeman and Big Sky
- Geotechnical reports, septic permitting, and commercial site support in the Billings market
- Boundary survey, ALTA, and land development for multi-family and custom homes
- Recent work includes Big Sky Subgrade Inspections, Housing; Gallatin County Septic & Geotech, Housing; and Billings Commercial Site Plans, Commercial
