Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, Inc. (Legal Services), a non-profit law firm providing free, quality civil legal services to people living with low income/low opportunity, is seeking a full-time temporary Social Worker for its Health & Welfare Programs. This temporary position is expected to start on September 1, 2026 and end on February 1, 2027. The Social Worker will work closely with Health & Welfare advocates to conduct holistic advocacy for low-income clients seeking access to Medicaid, SNAP, and other public benefits.
Responsibilities
-Upon referral, conduct needs assessments and risk assessments for new clients
Develop case plans and stabilization goals to support client aspirations
-As indicated by needs or risk assessments, assist clients with: food access; health care access; medical debt payment plans/charity care; shelter; transportation; financial assistance programs
-Build relationships with social workers and case managers at Medicaid managed care plans, health centers, and other providers’ offices to ensure continuity of care after the legal case closes
-Engage in systemic advocacy by attending community meetings and other stakeholder coalitions
Requirements
· Master of Social Work (MSW) and two years of experience preferred
· Experience working with low-income people as a social worker preferred
· Experience working with seniors and people with disabilities
· Strong problem-solving and de-escalation skills
· Ability to relate well and work with low-income clients and collaborate with community stakeholders
· Strong communication skills, organizational skills, work ethic, flexibility, and teamwork
· Knowledgeable in Microsoft Office and able to quickly learn new systems

As part of our community education/outreach efforts, LSEM works with over 150 agencies and participates in over 35 task forces/coalitions and has a vibrant Volunteer Lawyers Program.

Salary & Benefits Information
The pay rate for this position starts at $24.25/hour with a BSW and $26.40/hour with an MSW. The specific hourly rate offered to a candidate will be determined by years of relevant experience. This temporary position is not eligible for benefits.
