Description
Our client is a technology company solving payments problems for businesses. Their mission is to help businesses in Africa become profitable, envied, and loved. They provide a suite of products to help businesses accept payments online and offline, manage their operations, and grow their business. Our client is driven by a commitment to excellence, innovation, and customer satisfaction.
Role Overview
Our client is looking for a Senior Web Designer to help make our client the most delightful payments platform for businesses and their customers across Africa. You're a strong designer who can build what you design; someone who thinks of the web itself as a design surface, not just a delivery mechanism for someone else's file.
You'll own their public-facing web presence: designing and building microsites, product pages, and campaign landing pages that help sell our products and services. You care as much about keeping people on a page as you do about how it looks.
You'll report to the Design Studio Lead, and work closely with frontend engineers who are deeply focused on performance and systems. You don't need to own that depth yourself. You should be able to design and build a page to production quality on your own, and partner with an engineer to fine-tune performance, edge cases, and systems integration.
Job Type: Full Time/Permanent
Location: Nigeria
Workplace: Hybrid
Requirements
Design & build
- 5+ years of web design or design engineering experience at a tech-forward, product-driven company.
- You think of the web as a design surface — you have a sharp eye for typography, layout, motion, and detail, and can implement pixel-perfect UIs from a spec or your own concept.
- You have strong HTML and CSS, are comfortable working in React (TypeScript a plus), and can work with modern frontend tooling and Git. You write clean, shippable front-end code without needing to be a full software engineer.
- You have experience with motion and interactivity on the web with tools like GSAP, Framer Motion, CSS animations, scroll-driven animation, or similar.
- You have a portfolio of interactive or motion-heavy web work such as microsites, WebGL experiments, CSS art, Figma plugins, or similar.
- You're fluent in Figma and can bridge design and build yourself, collaborating closely with designers when they're available and holding both sides when they're not.
Judgement & delivery
- You can take a brief and turn it into a polished, production-ready web experience end to end, with minimal direction.
- You treat accessibility (WCAG) and cross-browser, cross-device support as defaults, not afterthoughts.
- You're familiar with Webflow or similar low-code tools, SEO best practices, and web analytics or conversion tracking.
- You have strong product and storytelling instincts, and make good decisions when requirements are ambiguous.
- You use LLMs or AI development tools to speed up exploration and delivery.
Bonus points
- Understand frontend performance fundamentals (image optimisation, loading strategy, Core Web Vitals) and design with real-world network conditions in mind.
- Have experience with Three.js, WebGL, React Three Fiber, or other immersive web technologies.
- Have built design systems, component libraries, or reusable interaction patterns.
- Have experience with internationalisation or localisation for multilingual sites.
Responsibilities
- Own our public web presence end to end. From our client to microsites and campaign-specific landing pages, you'll take a brief from concept through to a shipped, production-ready experience.
- Design and build, not just one or the other. You'll translate briefs, product narratives, and visual direction into interfaces yourself — pixel-perfect, responsive, accessible, and fast.
- Create strong work even without a full brief. Your taste and design sensibilities mean you don't need everything spelt out. You'll shape interaction patterns, motion, and web experience concepts where the brief isn't fully formed.
- Build for scale. You'll create reusable components, patterns, and interaction systems that speed up future web work and help maintain our design system across web properties.
- Optimise for people, not just pages. You'll build with performance, accessibility, and conversion in mind across devices and connection speeds, so pages are fast, usable by everyone, and keep people engaged.
- Bring engineering judgment to creative decisions. You'll weigh the animation approach and maintainability, keep performance in mind without needing to be the one obsessing over it, and partner closely with the engineer who owns deeper performance and systems work.
- Give and receive feedback. You'll join design crits, share work early, and help the team sharpen its taste collectively.
