Job Description Summary:

The Department of Biology at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, seeks applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in Ecology. Appointment will begin August 10, 2027. We are interested in individuals with research and teaching expertise in ecology with a specialization in biostatistics and/or quantitative biology. Applicants whose research is focused on any aspect of ecology will be considered as long as there is a strong quantitative aspect to their research and teaching interests.

Duties include research, teaching, and service to the University. The applicant is expected to establish and maintain a vibrant externally funded research program that inspires a highly motivated body of undergraduate and master’s students. Teaching duties include a large, undergraduate introductory biostatistics course that serves students across the biology department, engaging undergraduate courses in ecology, and other lecture or seminar-style courses in the applicant’s area of expertise, including advanced or graduate-level biostatistics course. Teaching expectation is 2 courses per semester.

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in biology, biomathematics or biostatistics, or a closely related field, at the time appointment begins (August 10, 2027).
  • Applicants must have completed 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline in which they will teach
  • Evidence of research expertise in ecology, biomathematics, or significant experience in other areas of quantitative ecology.
  • Evidence of teaching expertise in ecology, biostatistics, or significant experience in other areas of quantitative biology or biomathematics.
  • Ability to teach compelling courses in ecology and biostatistics.
  • Experience (or ability) to teach other lecture and seminar-style courses.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous teaching experience in ecology and an established record of mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate research.
  • Evidence of scholarly achievement, including peer-reviewed publications in competitive outlets and nationally competitive grants or other awards.
  • Postdoctoral research experience is strongly preferred.
  • A research program that can leverage on-campus and local natural resources and sites will be viewed as desirable. 

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position may require additional hours beyond the typical work week, including occasional overnight and weekend work as needed to meet the business needs of the operation.

For international hires, a letter of graduate credit hour completion from your graduate school may be submitted if unofficial transcripts are not provided by your university
