THE POSITION

The City of Santa Barbara Police Department is seeking candidates for a Police Services Coordinator position(s). This position performs a variety of specialized field and office Professional Staff duties of advanced level clerical / technical functions for the Police Department.


Knowledge of:
  • Ordinances, codes, policies, and procedures related to the release and maintenance of police records.
  • Basic math. 
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. 
  • Modern office practices and methods, including personal computers and auxiliary equipment. 
  • Principles of manual and automated file retrieval and maintenance. 
  • Familiarity with Word, Excel desirable, Canva, and social media websites. 

Ability to:
  • Make sound independent decisions within established procedural guidelines.
  • Make effective presentations to in-house and community groups. 
  • Organize own work, setting priorities and meeting critical deadlines. 
  • Interpret, apply, and explain policies, procedures, laws and regulations; and provide documentation, reports and data to management staff as requested. 
  • Operate a personal computer.
  • Input and retrieve. 
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including police dept. personnel, outside agencies and the public. 
  • Questioning / interviewing skills necessary to gather information necessary for complete information.
  • Operate a computer and auxiliary equipment used in assigned duties. 
  • Type at speed necessary for successful job performance. 
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Communicate professionally, clearly, concisely, both orally and in writing. 
  • Interpret and explain City policies and procedures. 
  • Maintain records and prepare reports. 
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.

Education and/or Training:
Course work in criminal justice administration, public administration, or a related field desirable, but not required.

The selection process may consist of an application screening, written exam, computer skills exam and/or an oral interview. The successful candidate's employment history will be thoroughly evaluated prior to appointment.  Additionally, the selection may require an additional Department Interview, Polygraph examination, Background Investigation, Medical Examination and Drug Screening.
