We are seeking a Sr. Manager, Search Science to lead one of the most critical components in eBay Search - Ranking, Relevance & Retrieval. In this role, you will focus on optimizing eBay’s personalized and contextualized search experience, driving meaningful connections between buyers and sellers. You will have the outstanding opportunity to develop the eBay Memory & Search roadmap through your insights, experimentation, and thought leadership. Your work will directly influence how millions of people discover and interact with items on eBay. You will guide and support a team of data scientists as a people and project leader. You will provide technical mentorship, set clear priorities, and ensure high execution and delivery standards.
You will be responsible for developing team capabilities, managing end-to-end projects, and driving excellence in both outcomes and collaboration.
With a vision to drive groundbreaking change in customer experience and boost business growth, we analyze the largest e-Commerce datasets. We apply outstanding analytic and big data techniques to extract impactful insights. We work closely with product and engineering teams to identify and resolve opportunities that support the product roadmaps.
Responsibilities:
Lead and mentor a collective of data scientists, offering technical mentorship, setting priorities, and ensuring high-quality execution and delivery.
Carry out, assess, and explore in detail A/B tests and deliver useful advice on refining the search features.
Perform statistical analysis and modeling of customer’s behavioral data to find opportunities to build new search features solving for key difficulties in the search user journey.
Identify new growth opportunities and provide actionable recommendations by bringing to bear insights across behavioral data, customer research, and data science.
Decode and validate web tracking to analyze user behaviors around new features.
Develop metrics to measure product success and guide product roadmap.
Drive self-serve for commonly used metrics by building dashboards and onboarding metrics to the Experimentation Platform.
To thrive in this position:
Master’s degree in Statistics, Applied Econometrics, Math, Physics, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, or other related core sciences or equivalent.
6+ years of relevant professional experience.
Experience with site experimentation (A/B testing).
Demonstrated success in people leadership or managing complex projects from start to finish. Able to stay hands-on in technical execution and daily details while working at a strategic level.
Balance critical thinking and hands-on analyses using tools & packages such as SQL, R, Python, Tableau, etc.
Super strong technical skills to turn big data in Hadoop into practical insights.
Ability to think about the big picture and connect the dots to evaluate how the insights impact eBay’s ecosystem.
Proactive collaboration and effective communication are needed.
Flexible and capable of working across multiple time zones.
Additionally, the following background and experience is preferred:
Prior experience in Search and understanding of how a search engine works.
Consistent track record of turning insights into product growth opportunities in prior roles with growing scope and responsibilities.
Ability to present complex analyses and insights effectively in simple terms.
Good experience with both descriptive and inferential statistics.
Experience in a leading technology company.
Background in e-commerce product experience.
Experience with Natural Language Processing or LLM/GenAI is a plus.
Additional Details
The base pay range for this position is expected in the range below:
C$141,600 - C$189,000Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a target bonus and restricted stock units (as applicable) in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including RRSP eligibility, various paid time off benefits, such as PTO and parental leave). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
