Description
The purpose of this classification is to prepare and provide verbatim record of all court proceedings as required or as requested by the Court, counsel or other parties; when requested, transcribes and certifies all court proceedings as recorded. Work is performed under the general supervision of the assigned Judge and the Court Administrator.
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Attends courtroom and/or other legal proceedings to make verbatim official recordings and to record formal and/or informal meetings as requested by the Court, Court Administrators office, counsel or other parties; utilizes stenography and voice to text equipment; sets up, connects and verifies proper operation of equipment prior to proceedings; and ensure confidentiality of all evidence and testimony.
Reiterates transcripts during trial and courtroom proceedings. Prepares certified written and electronic verbatim transcripts according to standardized formats; proofreads, edits, prints, and binds transcript; prepares trial index; attaches photocopies of all trial exhibits; certifies accuracy and completeness of printed transcripts; files transcripts and documents with the Clerk of Court in a timely manner.
Reviews court calendars and plans for other court reporters to provide services when needed; provides administrative and court management support, as needed.
Records and writes court notes during hearings to identify and note significant events; locates and presents prior testimony as requested.
Prepares, collates, and binds printed transcripts of court proceedings; prepares digital media copies of transcripts as requested; backs-up and archives electronic files, exhibits and notes on court provided electronic storage system in compliance with applicable laws.
Provides cost estimates of court transcripts, when applicable. Responds to requests for transcripts within designated timeframes. Duplicates tapes of official records for requesting parties. Prepares invoices for transcription services of court proceedings, court orders, and other legal hearings, when applicable.
Tasks and duties performed are provided inclusive of all Court Reporter services that would normally be chargeable to the County as allowed by Georgia law. No additional per-diem or other fees will be chargeable to the County.
Interfaces with the public in a courteous and professional manner, in person and on the telephone.
Upon request, fills in for other court reporters in the department; provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
Maintains professionalism at the highest level by complying with the Board of Court Reporting of the Judicial Council of Georgia Mandatory Code of Professional Practice.
Maintains certification in good standing with the Board of Court Reporting of the Judicial Council of Georgia.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONSPerforms other related duties as required.
High School Diploma or G.E.D.; supplemented by training from a recognized court reporting program, and one (1) year of court reporting experience including knowledge of court reporting procedures, rules and regulations set forth by the Board of Court Reporting of the Judicial Council of Georgia; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Georgia Court Reporter Certification. Must possess and maintain State of Georgia Notary Public certification.
