About this role:

Reporting directly to the Vice President for Student Life, the Director of Counseling Services provides clinical and administrative leadership for a multidisciplinary mental health team serving Berea's undergraduate students.

This is a hands-on leadership opportunity combining strategic direction, team development, clinical practice, crisis response, prevention and outreach, and campus-wide collaboration. The Director oversees a residential college counseling clinic with a team of 6–8 therapists and other professionals, including practicum students, a psychiatric nurse practitioner, and administrative staff.

Beyond leading the Counseling Services team, you'll serve as an important resource to College leadership on student mental health trends, participate on Berea's Care Team and crisis management teams, and build partnerships across campus and throughout the community. You'll also maintain an active clinical caseload appropriate to the demands of the leadership role.

How you will spend your time

  • Provide leadership, vision, and strategic direction for Counseling Services, ensuring high-quality, student-centered mental health services.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals, including therapists and provisionally licensed counselors, while fostering cohesion and strong working relationships.
  • Maintain an active clinical caseload appropriate to administrative responsibilities and student demand, providing individual, couples, group, and family counseling and developing treatment plans as needed.
  • Ensure Counseling Services meets applicable professional, legal, ethical, confidentiality, and regulatory standards, including HIPAA and FERPA requirements.
  • Lead the development, delivery, and assessment of mental health education, prevention, wellness, and awareness initiatives for students.
  • Provide leadership during student mental health crises and collaborate closely with Public Safety, Residence Life, and other campus partners on crisis intervention, training, and planning.
  • Build and maintain relationships with external mental health professionals and community agencies to expand access to specialized services, including psychiatric assessment and medication management.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to College leadership on emerging student mental health needs, trends, risks, and best practices, providing regular reports on Counseling Services activities and outcomes.
  • Establish annual departmental objectives, benchmarks, and Institutional Effectiveness outcomes aligned with the College's mission and Student Life strategic priorities.
  • Manage departmental resources, assist with budget development and oversight, and identify grant-funded initiatives, community partnerships, and other opportunities to strengthen mental health services.
  • Represent Counseling Services through campus outreach, committees, task forces, professional networks, and partnerships across the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
  • Maintain professional competencies and licensure through ongoing development and, as needed, contribute to Berea's academic mission by developing and teaching no more than one undergraduate course per academic year.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in counseling, psychology, marriage and family therapy, social work, or another mental health-related field.
  • At least seven years of professional experience providing mental health services.
  • Three or more years of supervisory or administrative experience within a mental health setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience supervising experienced professionals and leading program development and assessment.
  • Experience supervising counselors, therapists, case managers, and/or administrative staff.
  • Strong therapeutic counseling skills with experience in individual, couples, and group counseling.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively and sensitively manage mental health crises.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the legal, ethical, and professional standards governing mental health practice and patient confidentiality.
  • Experience serving diverse populations and sensitivity to the needs of students with limited resources, including financial resources.
  • Strong interpersonal and intercultural skills with the ability to build collaborative partnerships across campus and within the broader community.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, senior leadership, and trustees.
  • Experience managing personnel and operational budgets and the ability to manage grant-funded resources.
  • Familiarity with electronic health records, data management systems, Microsoft Office 365, student information systems, case management software, and related technology.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for special events or campus needs with prior notice.
  • Ability to navigate campus buildings and grounds and physically respond to campus mental health needs during a crisis.
  • Ability to obtain an active Kentucky license within 90 days of employment and meet applicable Kentucky requirements for the practice and supervision of mental health therapy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in psychology (Ph.D. or Psy.D.).
  • Counseling experience within a residential college or university setting.
  • Full Kentucky licensure with supervisory authority (LPC-S).
  • Experience developing educational content and teaching undergraduate students.
