JOB SUMMARY:Within the context of a person and family centred model of care and, in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Providence Health Care, the person promotes a safe, respectful, and civil working environment for patients, residents, families, visitors and staff.Reporting to the Director, Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care (SHPC), the Spiritual Health Practitioner, Lead provides leadership for colleagues in designated areas and consults and guides practitioners and on-call resources to enable them to live the mission every day and achieve excellence in person centered care, education, and integration.Develops and oversees Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care programs and services in collaboration with the Director. Coordinates the work activities of designated staff, initiates and participates in recruitment of new staff, conducts performance evaluations, and facilitates effective resolutions to workplace challenges. Provides staff, residents, patients, clients, families, and community volunteers education related to Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care. Provides educational opportunities for students through mentoring, clinical supervision, and consultation. Collaborates with other health care professionals and community support groups in educational, clinical, and research endeavours related to client care, family needs and staff professional development.Develops strong partnerships with community clergy and other religious / spiritual faith leaders to provide consultation and support on spiritual matters. Demonstrates initiative, collaboration, facilitation, and engagement with diverse communities, both internal and external to the organization, to enable PHC to live its Mission and Values with integrity in all aspects of its day-to-day activities. Leads the Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care team in the planning, development, implementation, and communication of its strategic directions, policies, and procedures under the leadership of Director of Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care.Spiritual Health Practitioner, Lead works in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team to assess spiritual care need and provide comprehensive spiritual care and emotional support to patients, residents, families, and staff during times of crisis, mentors and supports volunteer community faith leaders who provide ministry to patients, residents and provides support as a preceptor to Clinical Psychospiritual Education (CPE) interns and residents. Supports patients, residents and their families who are considering, or who are engaged in, end of life conversations in a manner that is appropriate to belief systems and cultural diversity. Evaluate individual and team performance in collaboration with the Director.Designs, establishes, monitors, and leads Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care programs in collaboration with the Director of Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care to provide effective leadership within and across the organization to enable the Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care team to flourish and bring contribution to PHC’s wholistic care.Participates in the development of the annual goals and strategies for Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care to meet the department’s objective of enabling PHC to act on its mission, vision and shared values in a timely and meaningful manner. Identifies education goals and objectives and ensures sound ethical educational practices to advance the program.Provides leadership in Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care education in accordance with the organization’s mission, vision, values and strategic direction as well as the program’s vision and philosophy and professional practice standards by fostering a climate of continued learning and growth and encouraging and supporting a variety of educational programs and strategies.Collaborates in the development of the program budget to complement strategic directions within existing fiscal constraints and uses best utilization methods to thoroughly monitor and adhere to allocated budget.Collaborates with key internal partners such as site and program leaders as they seek to implement changes and strengthen their programs. Serves on various committees/task forces within PHC that fosters the ability to act upon the PHC spirituality. Represents the department and the profession at the request of the Director.Assists the Director with the development of policies and procedures for Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care and assists with quality improvement and risk management activities as needed.Oversees the department’s communications, including various tools such as bulletin boards, email, and website to share information and programs and services. Works with the Communications department to design and create materials and collaborates with other programs and services to advances PHC's spirituality.Creates an environment of evidence-based practice that encourages participation in research, fosters personal growth and supports opportunities for teaching and education of students and staff.Models and leads writing grant applications and other related documents to support the work of the department. Prepares regular reports on department activities.Provides spiritual care to patients, residents, families, and staff. Assesses, and provides comprehensive spiritual and emotional support through counseling and supportive presence at times of anxiety, loss, death, and other spiritual and existential distress, to inspire strength, courage and hope to patients/residents/families according to their stated beliefs and practices.Assists the Director with implementing health and safety requirements. Immediately reports unsafe situations by notifying the Director or other appropriate personnel.Stays abreast of any new developments with the national curriculum and the CASC/ACSS Educational Standards Commission and ensures that educators are aware of any changes.Promotes on-going spiritual well-being of patients/residents through listening, prayer and group support such as Memorial Services, spirituality groups, Study of Sacred text and Hymn Sing.Collaborates with spiritual/cultural representatives and clergy in the community, when requested by patients and residents and supports religious/spiritual leaders and faith specific volunteer visitors in their ministry.Provides spiritual and emotional support to staff during times of crisis, by active listening, supportive presence for spiritual enrichment, and at times, conducting rituals/memorials/debriefing when there has been death of a patient/resident/staff member.Maintains daily record of spiritual care activity offered to patients/residents and staff and submits these on a timely basis, as required.Mentors and supports volunteer visitors who provide ministry to patients/residents through religious/spiritual visits and participation in group events.Plans and participates in facility-wide celebrations, such as Worship Services and Memorial Services for individuals or groups.Encourages staff awareness of, and respect for, different expressions of spirituality through in-services and one-on-one conversations. Encourages staff to be aware of the strength that a patient/resident can experience through their beliefs and practices.Participates in sharing on-call and/or back-up on-call duties, as required. Available to respond to organizational emergencies (Code Orange, Psychosocial Disaster Response Team, etc.) and act as a liaison during crisis intervention.Participates in Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care team activities, including team meetings, Spiritual Health Awareness Week, retreats, and huddles.Provides spiritual health support in accordance with the expectations of Catholic Healthcare principles and Health Ethics Guidelines. Participates in team meetings and organizational meetings as required.Engages in research projects and opportunities both within and outside of the department.Performs other related duties as required.
