Job Description Summary:

The Senior Research Data Analyst will contribute to a multi-year assessment of health service utilization and outcomes in the south-central Midwest/Great Plains in collaboration with a multidisciplinary research team of demographers and health services researchers. In this position, the data analyst will contribute to the quantitative analysis of large scale federal administrative data sets (Medicare, Medicaid claims), as well as report, manuscript, and grant preparation.

  • Perform descriptive and model-based analyses to support health service utilization and outcomes assessment(s).

  • Generate clear, publication-quality visualizations and tables to communicate analytic findings to a wide audience, including policy audiences and community stakeholders.

  • Conducts activities in a professional and ethical manner, and in accordance with KUMC Policies and applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations.

  • Performs job responsibilities in a safe and secure manner.

  • Coordinate work with other University areas ensure integration and support of the University mission.

  • Develops, maintains and expands job-specific knowledge and skills to keep pace with industry changes and supports the university's commitment to excellence and innovation.

  • Participates in relevant committees, task force, or other similar activities.

  • Maintain confidentiality of medical center, employee, and patient information. Manages sensitive data with discretion and in accordance with KUMC policies and legal requirements.

  • Maintains the highest standards of integrity, respect, professional conduct, and ethical standards.

  • Identify analytic needs of research questions; design and execute analyses that provide meaningful and actionable answers.

  • Clean, organize, and link multiple large datasets and ensure reproducibility and data integrity.

  • Interpretation of results and dissemination of findings through preparation of reports, journal articles, presentations, and other scholarly outputs. Specifically, contributions towards analytic design and support.

  • Assist with IRB and other regulatory requirements (e.g., data use agreements)

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.

  • May mentor and work as a resource for other team members in terms of quality data practice.

Required Qualifications:

Education:

  • Master’s degree in health services research, health policy, epidemiology, sociology, economics, biostatistics or a related field/subject area with high observational research content.

This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have advanced knowledge, analytical skills and professional competencies necessary to perform the duties of the position.  The level of degree is commonly recognized as the standard qualification for similar roles in the public and private sector, ensuring that the university remains competitive with industry aligned practices, enhances collaboration with external partners, and supports the delivery of services and programs that meet professional and market-driven expectations.

Work Experience:

  • Two (2) years of research experience managing and analyzing administrative claims data, including creation of analytic cohorts and evaluation of diagnostic and procedure codes.

  • Experience and proficiency with one or more statistical software packages (SAS, R, Python, STATA), including data visualization.

Preferred Qualifications:

Work Experience:

  • Six (6) years of related research and scientific experience.

  • Experience communicating observational research information (written and oral)

  • Experience managing and analyzing Medicare fee-for-service claims, Medicare Advantage encounters, and/or Medicaid claims data

  • Experience with other large healthcare-related secondary datasets, including electronic medical records and national survey data

  • Applied experience with or substantive knowledge of the U.S. health care system and U.S. health policy landscape, including baseline understanding of state and federal health insurance programs inclusive of Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

  • Evidence of scholarship in rural health service delivery, rural health, health services research, health policy.

Comprehensive Benefits Package:

Coverage begins on day one for health, dental, and vision insurance and includes health expense accounts with generous employer contributions if the employee participates in a qualifying health plan. Employer-paid life insurance, long-term disability insurance, and various additional voluntary insurance plans are available. Paid time off, including vacation and sick, begins accruing upon hire, plus ten paid holidays. One paid discretionary day is available after six months of employment, and paid time off for bereavement, jury duty, military service, and parental leave is available after 12 months of employment. Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
