Job Description Summary:

The Patient Support Specialist in Radiation Oncology is an integral member of the team, a position which requires collaborating with patients, physicians, and staff, ensuring the needs of patients are fulfilled and assisting others in the department to do the same.

Key objectives of the position include:

1. Maintaining open communication and collaborating with all members of the Radiation Therapy team.
2. Acting as liaison between patients and physicians.
3. Obtaining authorizations from insurance companies for diagnostic studies.
4. Coordinating the scheduling of scans and procedures.
5. Ensuring patients are roomed in a timely and efficient manner.
6. Keeping exam rooms clean and stocked with linens and supplies.

Job Requirements, Prerequisites and Essential Functions:

EDUCATION
High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required

EXPERIENCE
At least two years of full-time medical care experience required.

LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATIONS

Basic Life Support Required at hire
Integrative Agitation Management (IAM) Required within 30 days of hire

PREREQUISITE SKILLS
1. Embody all of Marin General Hospital’s C.A.R.E.S. standards.
2. Function effectively and multi-task in a fast-paced medical environment.
3. Possess exceptional inter-personal skills in order to connect with patients, as well as successfully interact with colleagues, physicians, and staff.
4. Represent the department appropriately during contact with patients and their families.
5. Work relatively independently on prioritizing job responsibilities and managing patient flow through the clinic.
6. Extrapolate knowledge of a patient’s cancer diagnosis and clinical condition to successfully obtain insurance authorization for scans and procedures.
7. Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to insurance authorizations.
8. Communicate clearly and effectively with patients to coordinate details of scheduling and prep for scans.
9. Attention to detail and demonstration of follow through.
10. Intermediate knowledge of infection control practices.
11. Basic knowledge of medical terminology, diagnostic exams, and required prep.
12. Demonstrate skill in the use of medical databases and computers.
13. Bi-lingual (English & Spanish) beneficial.

Compensation:

The posted pay range complies with applicable law and reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this role. Individual pay is set by skills, experience, qualifications, and internal/market equity, consistent with MarinHealth’s compensation philosophy. Positions covered by collective bargaining agreements are governed by those agreements.
