Description
The Yard Marshall is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and organised management of the site's operational yard. The role involves directing vehicle movements, maintaining housekeeping standards, inspecting incoming and outgoing materials, and supporting site operations to ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and operational requirements.
The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining a safe working environment while supporting the smooth flow of materials throughout the facility.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely marshal and direct the movement of HGVs, plant, and other vehicles within the yard.
- Manage traffic flow to minimise congestion and ensure operational efficiency.
- Conduct visual inspections of incoming and outgoing waste and recyclable materials.
- Ensure materials are correctly stored and segregated in designated areas.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping across the yard and operational areas.
- Carry out routine yard inspections and report any safety hazards, defects, or environmental concerns.
- Assist with loading and unloading activities as required.
- Communicate effectively with drivers, site operatives, and management teams.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, environmental permits, and site procedures.
- Support site safety initiatives and contribute to a positive safety culture.
- Complete relevant paperwork, records, and operational checks accurately.
- Assist with general operational duties as required to support business needs.
Health, Safety & Environmental Responsibilities
- Adhere to all Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality procedures.
- Ensure all work activities are carried out safely and in accordance with site rules.
- Wear appropriate PPE at all times.
- Report accidents, incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions promptly.
- Participate in safety briefings, toolbox talks, and training sessions.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Essential
- Previous experience working within a busy yard, waste management, recycling, logistics, or industrial environment.
- Good understanding of health and safety requirements.
- Ability to communicate effectively with drivers, visitors, and colleagues.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Flexible and proactive approach to work.
Desirable
- Shovel Loader Licence (NPORS, CPCS, or equivalent).
- Excavator Licence (NPORS, CPCS, or equivalent).
- Banksman / Vehicle Marshal qualification.
- FLT Licence.
- Experience within the waste management or recycling industry.
- Knowledge of environmental compliance and waste handling procedures.
