Tunnel TBM Operation Inspector

Dubai -UAE


Parsons is looking for an amazingly talented Tunnel - TBM Operation Inspector to join our team!

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Assist the Resident Engineer in supervising tunnel construction activities, mainly for TBM operations, tunnel lining & segment repair. Preferable EPB previous experience.

  • Monitor TBM tunnelling operations and ensure that excavation as per drive instruction sheet and lining activities are carried out in accordance with approved methods statement, ITP’s & TBM protocol aligned with contract specifications.

  • Review drive instruction sheet and monitor the implementation of the assigned parameter during TBM operations, including face pressure, machine advance rate, applied torque and thrust force, cutterhead rpm, screw conveyor and muck parameters, where applicable and other relevant machine data.

  • Ability to identify abnormal conditions & potential risk during TBM advance in relative to the applied face pressure and the current location of the machine to the adjacent buildings and roads.

  • Verify annular gap/backfill grouting operations, including grout pressure, grout volume, grout mix, injection sequence, and continuity of grouting behind the tunnel segments.

  • Inspect and monitor TBM ring installation, including gasket condition, segment identification, segment positioning, ring build-up/lips and steps, joint alignment, and segment damage if any in relative to approved ITP’s and approved segment repair method statement.

  • Inspect bored tunnel segment condition and identify defects such as cracks, damaged edges, isolated moisture damps, source of leakages if any and classified as per contract requirements.

  • Supervise and follow up regular TBM related activities in terms of applying tail seal grease, regular maintenance, grout supply, segment handling, foam consumption within the TBM and to ensure steady and safe operation.

  • Coordinate with the TBM operation team to implement & review shift/daily reports, TBM data including excavation, ring installation and grouting records.

  • Identify and report abnormal TBM parameters, excessive ground settlement, unexpected ground conditions, water ingress, loss of face pressure, excessive grout pressure, or other conditions that may affect tunnel stability/TBM operation.

  • Coordinate with I&M teams for closer monitoring to ensure that any settlement occur remains within the allowable design limits during TBM operations in critical zones such as main roads, existing buildings, public utilities & structures and any other critical assets/waterways.

  • During TBM advance to report/notify the Geotechnical teams to assess any abnormal ground behavior due to unexpected changes in ground conditions which may lead to discrepancy to the approved design.

  • Closely coordinate with TBM shift contractor team to provide technical guidance ensuring consistent inspection and reporting standards.

  • Review method statements, material submittals, technical proposals, test plans and other technical documents related to tunnel construction providing comments and recommendation to the resident engineer.

  • Provide technical assistance to the construction supervision team regarding tunnel excavation, segment erection, grouting, waterproofing, and associated tunnel works.

  • Coordinate with design engineers regarding structural or constructability issues encountered during tunnel construction and assist in developing appropriate solutions.

  • Inspect tunnel drainage (temporary and permanent systems) to ensure safe & smooth TBM operation.

  • Investigate for the root cause of any incident to define and implement the corrective and preventive actions needed/to close it out within the required timeframe.

  • Monitor tunnel construction progress against the approved baseline programmed and construction sequence, highlighting any predicted delay

  • Ensure that construction records and as-built information are complete, accurate, traceable, and properly maintained.

  • Assist the Resident Engineer in identifying construction risks and implementing appropriate mitigation measures.

  • Ensure that tunnel construction activities are performed in accordance with approved HSE, Management and QA/QC plans.

  • Coordinate and supervise contractor team during TBM assembly, disassembly and transport from ports to site or between sites including road survey to define the accessible routes.

  • Monitor the preparation of (planned/unplanned interventions) including geological face mapping and review ground conditions encountered at intervention location and compare it with approved design condition/recommendation at TBM current position including rock quality, fractures joints, groundwater levels, weak zones, cavities, and other adverse conditions.

What Required Skills You'll Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field from an accredited institution.

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in construction supervision, with at least four (4) years on large diameter TBM tunnel operations within large scale tunnel/infrastructures projects

  • At least one TBM tunnel project completed from the start till completion stage.

  • Excessive Knowledge of TBM operation sequence is mandatory.

  • Familiarity with quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) procedures, including inspection test plans (ITPs) and material testing.

  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting shop drawings, specifications, and technical documents.

  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to identify non-conformances in TBM operation and sequence and defects in precast installed segments.

  • Strong organizational skills to maintain accurate records and documentation.

  • Proficiency in using computer software for reporting and record-keeping.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English.


What Desired Skills You'll Bring:

  • Previous experience working on metro rail or large-scale tunneling projects is highly desirable.

  • Experience in the UAE/GCC region with knowledge of local regulations and standards is preferable.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with contractors, engineers, and other stakeholders.

  • Commitment to promoting a safety-first culture in TBM operation.

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines while maintaining high-quality standards.
