Position Overview:

The Tax-Advantaged Solutions (TAS) Associate provides fundamental operational and quality control support for the department while undergoing active development to master the compliance rules and administrative procedures governing IRAs, HSAs, retirement plans, and education savings plans. This role handles baseline transaction processing (such as withdrawals and basic conversions), reconciles general ledgers, corrects minor transaction errors, and handles tier-1 service inquiries from branches and members.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • (30%) Entry-Level Support & Inquiries: Respond to fundamental member and branch inquiries regarding tax-advantaged accounts. Provide courteous, accurate information on basic administrative rules surrounding account openings, withdrawal forms, core contribution limits, and distribution choices.
  • (25%) Transactional Quality Control: Perform routine quality control audits on daily system maintenance logs, newly opened IRA/HSA document images, and missing beneficiary data fields to ensure total compliance.
  • (25%) Routine Department Operations: Process standard transactional requests, including basic withdrawals, account conversions, Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs), and automated recurring distributions. Rebalance departmental general ledgers (GLs) daily and resolve rejected system entries or adjustment requests.
  • (10%) Retirement Framework Onboarding: Actively study and cultivate functional working knowledge regarding retirement account mechanics (IRAs, TSERs, ORP, NC 401(k), 457, 403(b)) through structured training.
  • (10%) Regulatory Compliance Training: Dedicate focused effort to understanding IRS codes, compliance regulations, and credit union policies regarding tax-advantaged asset administration and where to retrieve authoritative internal references.

Required Education & Experience (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities):

  • High school diploma/GED and
  • 2 years of professional office, financial services, or customer service experience.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite, showing specific comfort navigating data entry and basic formulas in Excel.
  • Strong data entry accuracy and basic mathematical verification skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a customer-centric attitude.
  • Ability to quickly learn complex compliance rules and grasp how transactions (such as early withdrawals or withholding options) affect the owner financially.

Preferred Education & Experience (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Tax
  • Prior experience working in banking, credit unions, insurance, or basic tax preparation fields.
  • Familiarity with financial accounts or basic retirement account administration rules is a strong plus, though comprehensive training is provided.

Job Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Primary work location at an SECU facility in the Raleigh area, with remote work available as business needs and management allow.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting, computer use, and telephone/video communication.
