UW Information Technology has an outstanding opportunity for Senior Workday Payroll Engineer to join their team.
About this Opportunity
Reporting to Manager Business Application Services, the Senior Workday Payroll Engineer will support Tier 3 Application Management functions in Workday HR/Payroll, a cloud-based human resource management software system. This position is responsible for system administration, configuring, maintaining, and managing an organization's Workday environment so it meets business and operational needs.
Key Responsibilities
Workday Configuration and System Administration (70%)
- Apply comprehensive knowledge of Workday system administration, including foundational design concepts, data conventions, workflow dependencies, and technical inter-dependencies.
- Conduct systems analysis to identify enhancement opportunities and implement complex Workday configuration changes that support the HR/Payroll needs of the University.
- Develop and promote detailed configuration and administration guidance to optimize system functionality.
- Research, configure, test, and troubleshoot Enterprise Interface Builder (EIB) integrations for data loading, including template setup and resolution of complex issues.
Advanced Operational System Administration (20%)
- Work closely with cross-functional Workday teams to configure, enhance, and maintain enterprise HR/Payroll solutions aligned with institutional goals.
- Serve as an advanced systems administrator and application leader by resolving complex user and stakeholder inquiries.
Knowledge Management, Training & Communication (10%)
- Maintain strong relationships with stakeholders to stay aligned on policies, procedures, and standards related to Workday operations.
- Support knowledge management activities, including updating and verifying knowledge repository content.
- Assist in developing, verifying, and delivering training materials and sessions relevant to Workday users and administrators as needed in the role of technical subject matter expert on configuration.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Information Science, Computer Science or related experience
- Four years of experience working in the Workday HR/Payroll domains with increasing responsibilities.
- Experience working with enterprise HR/Payroll systems and the configuration and maintenance thereof, including working specifically with the Workday HR/Payroll (or similar) HCM, Compensation, Academic, Talent, Recruiting, Learning, Benefits, Time Tracking, Absence, or Payroll modules.
- Experience analyzing complex HR/Payroll system processes and and implementing Workday configuration changes that support operational, compliance, and business requirements.
- Experience supporting system testing and/or data validation activities.
- Experience with reporting, data, and security in a SaaS environment.
- Demonstrated ability to understand business and technical design considerations and resolve issues through problem solving in the context of a customer service framework.
- Ability to communicate clearly, in writing and in verbal presentations, to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience interacting with customers, including resolution of complex inquiries and efficient performance during high-volume timeframes.
- Experience providing production support of mission critical systems.
- Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaising, and personal interaction abilities.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Workday Payroll configuration such as: creating custom pay components and the required calculations (e.g. logic, arithmetic, conditional, etc.), updating account posting rules, and updating payroll business processes, validations, and condition rules (e.g. costing allocations and payroll accounting adjustments).
- Experience performing configuration work in an Agile environment.
- Experience playing an individual contributor role within a shared services environment.
- Working experience executing relevant business processes at the University of Washington or in a comparable higher education environment.
- Experience in the use of customer support infrastructure tools, including a case management system, knowledge base and associated reporting tool.
- Experience with Workday Extend or other low code/no code platform.
Working Conditions
Hybrid working environment
Work environment deadlines include a semi-monthly ongoing payroll schedule for operations as well as project-driven effective dates and due dates.
Occasional work outside of business hours for timed deployments, urgent support, or planned recurring work such as the twice yearly Workday Release weekend in March and September.

UW Information Technology (UWIT) is the central information technology organization for the University of Washington, responsible for strategic planning, oversight, and direction of the UW’s IT infrastructure, resources, and services. UWIT provides critical technology support to all three campuses, UW Medicine, and research operations around the world. UWIT partners with the UW community to enable innovation, learning, discovery, and service.
Data & Applications (D&A) is the division in UWIT that runs the university’s academic and business systems, productivity platforms, enterprise integrations, learning analytics and data for decision-making and is also responsible for the accessibility of UW’s digital resources. Workday Operations is a unit within the Data & Applications division.
Within the Data & Applications Workday Operations organization, the HR/Payroll Application Management team acts as the system administrator, configuration team for UW’s Workday HR/Payroll modules such as Human Capital Management, Compensation, Academic, Talent, Recruiting, Learning, Benefits, Time Tracking, Absence, and Payroll, delivering services that are timely, accurate and highly attuned to the fast-paced university environment.
