Description
WE ARE BASH
Bash is South Africa's largest omnichannel shopping platform. We connect over 500 brands across the physical and digital world, for millions of South Africans, every day. We're building something with real scale and real consequence.
We're founder led, a team of true owners and humble learners. We work hard, hold a high bar, and show up for each other. The problems aren't easy and the pace is real but when you break through, the impact is felt across the business and by the customers who rely on us.
If that sounds like the kind of place where you'd do the best work of your career, we'd like to meet you.
About the role
We're looking for a bar raiser to join our Analytics Squad at Bash: someone who is passionate about data, loves making sense of it and turning it into valuable insights that help move the business forward. As an Analytics Engineer, you'll own a business mission end to end, sitting at the intersection of technical and domain expertise. We expect you to master both, going deep into how your area of the business works and how its data works, and bringing them together to create real value.
You'll work closely with stakeholders, engineers and operations teams to understand what they need, turn it into a clear data scope, then model, transform and visualise the data that delivers it. It's a hands-on role with real ownership, for someone who values simple over complex, cares about creating value, and keeps sharpening how they work with the technology available.
What you'll do
- Own a mission's data. Be the go-to data lead for your area of the business, setting priorities and making sure its data is trusted, documented and useful.
- For example, with a mission like “Make in-store shopping effortless”, you’d own everything data-related for our Omni sales initiatives, from understanding and gathering the data to transforming and analysing it.
- Guide stakeholders to clear requirements. Help stakeholders work out what they actually need and translate that into requirements. Ask the right questions before jumping to solutions, then translate business, engineering and operational needs into a clear data scope.
- Model and transform. Turn raw source data in our cloud warehouse into clean, tested, reusable models with well-structured and efficient SQL following best practises. Extend and evolve our semantic layer so that metrics are consistently defined, trusted and easy for people and AI tools to use across the business.
- Tell the story. Present data and analysis in a way that drives decisions, whether through dashboards and narratives.
- Work agentically. Use Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and similar tools to speed up the process end to end, delivering better solutions, faster.
- Create value, simply. Design the simplest solution that solves the real problem, and spot opportunities before anyone asks.
What you'll need
- 4+ years as an analytics engineer, data analyst, data scientist, data specialist, BI analyst, BI/data consultant or a similar role.
- A bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field, such as:
- Computer Science or Software Engineering
- Data Science or Data Analytics
- Statistics or Applied Mathematics
- Information Systems
- Engineering
- Quantitative Research
- Expert in SQL. Whether you write it yourself or your AI does, you can read and judge it fluently.
- Expert data modelling and transformation skills, such as dimensional modelling and building reusable models from raw data.
- Solid engineering practices: testing your models, working in a Git and pull request workflow, and using CI.
- Hands-on experience with a cloud data warehouse such as Snowflake, BigQuery or Databricks.
- Data visualisation and storytelling as a core competency: not just using a BI tool, but knowing how to present data and analysis so it lands.
- A track record of working with stakeholders to turn requirements into data solutions.
- Experience defining and owning metrics with business stakeholders, with a clear grasp of how metrics, measures and dimensions differ.
- Experience using agentic engineering workflows such as Claude Code, Cursor or Codex in your day-to-day engineering today, while keeping your own critical thinking sharp.
- A reviewer's mindset. You habitually review AI-generated code, models and analysis with a critical eye, and catch subtle errors before they ship.
Nice to have
- Experience with Qlik Sense or another traditional BI tool, especially if you've used AI or MCP tooling to supercharge how you transform data in it.
- dbt experience: models, tests and documentation in a Git-based workflow.
- Exposure to semantic layers.
- Experience in retail or ecommerce.
Who you are
- A clear communicator. You write and speak clearly, get to the point, adapt to your audience and respond promptly.
- A proactive self-starter. You find the problem, own it and see it through without waiting to be asked.
- Organised. Your work, code and documentation are tidy and easy for others to pick up.
- Obsessed with creating value. You judge your work by the difference it makes.
- A fan of simple over complex. You reach for the simplest approach that works.
- A problem solver and critical thinker. You ask questions before jumping into solution mode, challenge assumptions and reason from evidence.
- Ambitious. You've grown quickly in your career so far and want to keep growing.
- Curious and quick to learn. You dig past the first answer and pick up new tools and domains fast.
- A team player. You share what you learn and own outcomes with your colleagues.
- Someone who lifts others. You make the people around you better by mentoring, reviewing pull requests and teaching what you know.
Our hiring process
- Intro with the hiring manager.
- Culture conversation with stakeholders you'd work closely with.
- Technical assessment: a take-home exercise that you present in person at our Cape Town office.
- Final round with our leadership team.
We ask a few optional demographic questions to monitor fairness in hiring and comply with South Africa’s Employment Equity requirements. Your responses are confidential - stored separately from your application and never shown to hiring panels. We review the data only in aggregate to strengthen our sourcing so pipelines are diverse and all candidates receive equitable support. You can skip any question.
