Are you a forward-thinking electrical engineering student with a passion for technical innovation using electronics, designing digital circuits, and wanting to be immersed in a fast-paced, team-based collaborative work environment?  Join us in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for a Summer 2027 Internship in the Resilient Connectivity Products Hardware Department.

Working alongside experienced Collins’ engineers, you will have the unique opportunity to design and develop digital hardware used in high performance communication products that are critical to the defense of our nation, such as sophisticated software-defined radios and data links designed for use in ground, airborne, and space applications.

Candidates must be motivated to learn new technologies, a strong team player, and contribute to a positive work environment.  A successful candidate with talent and initiative can stand out and thrive in this role!

What You Will Do:

As an Electrical Engineer intern at Collins Aerospace/RTX,

  • You will perform circuit card design lifecycle activities including requirements capture, schematic capture, design documentation, signal integrity analysis, creation of printed circuit board stackup and routing instructions, coordination and review of printed wiring board layout, creation of test plans, and root cause analysis.
  • You will create and analyze electrical schematics.
  • You will select components necessary to implement the design requirements.
  • You will perform test and troubleshooting of electronic circuitry.
  • You will assist with digital hardware factory and field failure root cause analysis.

What You Will Learn:

  • How to merge theoretical knowledge gained in school with practical engineering applications.
  • Technical skills in all phases of hardware design (requirements capture, design, schematic capture, layout, test/verification, integration, and factory transition).
  • Design documentation methods and processes.
  • Signal and Power integrity analysis.
  • Printed circuit board stackup and routing instructions.
  • Coordination and review of printed wiring board layouts.
  • Creation of hardware test plans.

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Must be pursuing Bachelor’s or Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering  or related Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) degree and actively enrolled through the completion of the internship/co-op session.

“Experience may be obtained through on-the-job experience, research, coursework, or projects.”

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Experience with digital electronics design principles and techniques (e.g. circuit designs using Microprocessor/microcontroller, DSP, FPGA, ADC, DAC, etc.) and experience working with lab equipment (Oscilloscopes, Analyzers, etc.)
  • Experience with a schematic capture tool (examples may include Mentor Graphics DxDesigner, Siemens Xpedition Enterprise, Cadence Allegro, Altium, KiCad, or etc.) and signal integrity analysis tools (ex. Hyperlynx) for creation of circuit card designs.
  • Working knowledge of digital circuit design parameters (e.g., throughput, rise time, clock frequencies, propagation delay). Includes knowledge of computer hardware components (e.g., processors, memory, interfaces), and characteristics (e.g., throughput, processing architecture, timing, capacity).

What We Offer:

  • Our values drive our actions, behaviors, and performance with a vision for a safer, more connected world. At RTX we value: Trust, Respect, Accountability, Collaboration, and Innovation.
