A Brief Overview
The basic and translational research labs in the Division of Neonatology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia seek a Bioinformatic Scientist. The focus of the position is to develop, maintain, and to assist research with the computational analysis of genomic, proteomic, and other complex molecular data types.

This includes the support of internal bioinformatics software, implementation and modification of existing algorithms, pathway analysis and the development of new computational tools within the general area of bioinformatics analysis. The position allows for a wide variety of activities described within the job responsibilities and encompasses facilitating both basic and translational research. The hired individual will work directly with the principal investigators and lab trainees to both analyze existing data tailored to the given research questions and to design future experiments and analyses. The individual will have opportunities to be on many manuscripts and funding proposals

What you will do

  • Contributes to the maintenance and development of bioinformatic tools by developing knowledge of currently employed computational pipelines, manipulating these pipelines for new types of analyses and developing new programs and computational pipelines to facilitate existing bioinformatic needs more efficiently and to ask new questions.
  • Works across the research labs of the division to develop functioning pipelines upstream of customized
  • Maintains pipelines by staying current with evolving algorithms.
  • Implements and maintains commercial and open-source software for common bioinformatics and genomics data analysis.
  • Provides ad-hoc support and one-on-one and group-based training on key bioinformatics software, features, and workflows.
  • Provides efficient data management support including file transfers, data formatting and manipulation, and basic integration of data from a variety of experimental and reference resources.
  • Develops and maintains working relationship with data providers such as sequencing cores within CHOP and PENN
  • Advise the labs on experimental set up for sequencing (and other types of data that requires computational analysis) experiments and the downstream analysis.
  • Setup already established pipelines to analyze computational data (transcriptomics, genomic, epigenomic, metabolomic, proteomic, and single-cell data)
  • Manipulate existing computational pipelines to address new questions outside of the standard analysis
  • Develop new scripts and programs to provide custom analysis of data tailored to the research question
  • Work with the research labs on how to best present computational data for publication and presentation.
  • Effectively mine and leverage publicly available datasets to enhance the data being generated in the individual labs
  • Contributes to presentations, grants, and manuscripts under supervision by mentors and peers.
