Fire Assay Technician

General Accountability:

As a Fire Assay Technician within the Fire Assay department, your main responsibilities are fluxing, fusion and cupellation.

Specific Responsibilities:

• Manage crucibles and set up/prepare samples for fusion;

• Perform fusion and cupellation processes using furnace tools;

• Adjust flux based on sample matrices for common type of samples;

• Follow up on rush priority workloads;

• Ensure all safe work procedures and standard working procedures are strictly adhered to;

• Maintain and organize departmental inventory, such as supplies and chemicals;

• Ensure cleaning and maintenance schedules are complete;

• Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;

• Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;

• Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Familiar with all fire assay methods and their respective digestion volumes and finish methods;

• Strong analytical and mechanical skills;

• Organized and independently motivated;

• Detail oriented;

• Able to work independently or as part of a team;

• Able to effectively handle a high volume of work and time critical issues;

• Intermediate English communication skills (written and verbal)

• Basic MS Office skills, specifically MS Excel, Word and Outlook;

• Safety oriented.

Required Qualifications:

• Recognized Diploma or Degree in Science required, with a concentration in Chemistry or Chemical Sciences preferred or completion of the BC Assayers certification program required;

• Minimum of one year Fire Assay laboratory work experience in a production oriented environment preferred. 

Physical Demands

• Able to lift up to 50lbs;

• Able to work within a hot and dusty environment;

• Must be willing to comply with the following H&S requirements: 

  • Be clean shaven for Personal Protective Equipment (respirator);

  • Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;

  • Shower before the end of each shift;

  • Undergo la lead blood test required every 6 months;

• Able to stand for a full shift;

• Able to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;

• Possess manual dexterity to perform repetitive tasks;

• Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.

• An estimated hourly pay of $24.02 CAD at the time of posting. Individual compensation is determined by factors such as job-related skills, relevant experience, education and/or training.
