Responsibilities

Summary / Objective

The Assistant Shop Manager – Scenic supports the Shop Manager in the daily operation of the scenic fabrication shop, helping ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and to PRG's quality standards. This position serves as the Shop Manager's primary backup and assumes responsibility for shop operations in the Shop Manager's absence.

Working closely with Operations, Project Management, Technical Design, Asset Management, and Production, the Assistant Shop Manager coordinates daily shop activities, monitors workflow, supports production scheduling, supervises shop personnel, and helps maintain a safe, organized, and productive work environment.

 

The Assistant Shop Manager plays a key leadership role in supporting operational excellence, employee development, safety, quality control, and continuous improvement throughout the fabrication shop.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Provides day-to-day supervision of shop personnel under the direction of the Shop Manager.
  • Serves as acting Shop Manager during planned and unplanned absences.
  • Assists with employee training, coaching, onboarding, and development.
  • Helps enforce company policies, shop procedures, quality standards, and safety requirements.
  • Assists in monitoring employee performance and productivity.
  • Supports scheduling of daily work assignments and labor resources.

Essential Functions

  • Assist the Shop Manager in overseeing daily scenic fabrication shop operations.
  • Supervise daily fabrication activities to ensure projects remain on schedule and meet quality standards.
  • Coordinate inbound and outbound shipments, receiving, staging, and material movement throughout the facility.
  • Ensure all outbound equipment and fabricated elements are prepared and staged for shipment on time.
  • Review completed work for quality and accuracy prior to shipment.
  • Monitor shop organization, housekeeping, and safe work practices.
  • Assist in developing and executing daily and weekly production schedules.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers, Project Coordinators, Technical Designers, and Operations to resolve fabrication issues and production priorities.
  • Support inventory accuracy and proper tracking of shop assets and materials.
  • Oversee shipping and receiving operations and ensure required documentation is completed accurately.
  • Monitor equipment requiring maintenance or repair and coordinate repairs as needed.
  • Help identify staffing requirements and recommend overtime or additional labor based on workload.
  • Assist with implementing process improvements that increase efficiency, quality, and productivity.
  • Ensure employee timesheets are completed accurately and charged to the appropriate project numbers.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient work environment.
  • Perform additional operational duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Qualifications / Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong understanding of scenic fabrication, construction methods, welding, carpentry, metal fabrication, finishing, and installation practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and construction documents.
  • Working knowledge of fabrication equipment, shop processes, inventory systems, and quality control procedures.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and develop employees.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and adjust quickly to changing priorities.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, and Project. CAD experience is a plus.
  • Ability to maintain positive working relationships across multiple departments.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position approximately 50% of the time.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, climb stairs, kneel, crouch, and work throughout an active fabrication facility.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in both written and verbal forms.
  • Hearing and vision within normal ranges are required for inspecting work, reviewing drawings, and safely operating within a fabrication environment.

  • Understanding of and compliance with company policies.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, overtime, weekends, and holidays as business needs require.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives throughout shop operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Travel Required

  • Limited travel as required.
  • Valid driver's license required.

Required Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 5+ yearss of experience in scenic fabrication, theatrical construction, manufacturing, or a related production environment.
  • Previous experience in a lead, foreman, or supervisory role preferred.
  • Experience supervising fabrication crews and coordinating production schedules.
  • Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and project management software.
  • Experience with inventory management systems and production scheduling.

The pay range for this position is estimated to be 65k - 90k annually.  Actual salary to be determined by the experience, knowledge, skills, and  abilities of  the applicant combined with location and alignment with market data.
