Description
DEFINITION
Under direct or general supervision performs a variety of general manual labor duties related to the maintenance, repair and cleaning/upkeep of City facilities and infrastructure, as well as construction projects as assigned; conducts various safety inspections of public facilities; and performs other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

TYPICAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The responsibilities and essential duties performed on a frequent and recurring basis by an incumbent in this series include the following:
- Troubleshoots and performs minor electrical repairs; replaces ballasts, fluorescent tubes or bulbs.
- Performs rough in, top out, and finish plumbing and irrigation repairs to replace broken pipes; cleans plugged drains; performs routine maintenance on valve, fittings, and other fixtures; and installs new plumbing fixtures.
- Builds cabinets and shelves; performs limited structural and finish carpentry; hangs doors; repairs a variety of wooden objects; performs lock repairs, repairs concrete and tile, and installs glass.
- Prepares surfaces for painting; applies paint, varnish, shellac, enamel or other protective finishes to various surfaces; removes graffiti.
- Performs a variety of custodial duties in maintaining park structures, benches and other public facilities including cleaning restroom fixtures and replenishing restroom supplies; maintains inventory stock; cleans roof and roof drains; disposes waste and cleaning, waste receptacles; cleans/washes windows.
- Maintains HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems and performs limited repairs.
- Moves, arranges and sets up furniture and equipment for special events and meetings, or other City Department needs. Loads and unloads materials.
- Completes and maintains basic records of work performed and materials used as well as completion of inspection forms and reports. Prepares or maintains other required records.
- Responds to emergencies as required and can be placed on stand-by.
- Oversees court-appointed workers performing maintenance work and completes related paperwork.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
The Facilities Maintenance Technician I is an entry-level class in the Series. Incumbents in this class perform the routine duties. Advancement or placement to the Facilities Maintenance Technician II class is contingent upon acquiring the knowledge and experience necessary to effectively perform higher-level duties. The Facilities Maintenance Technician II is distinguished through experience and knowledge required to work independently.
CONTACTS AND RELATIONSHIP:
This position has the majority of its interaction with the public, vendors, contractors and other City employees.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
The Knowledge and abilities, which are required to perform the duties and responsibilities of this class, are as follows:
Experience: Two years’ experience in the construction trades in one or more disciplines such as HVAC, electrical, and plumbing. Experience in general repair and maintenance working for a public entity or private company in repair or maintenance.
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities required.
Licenses Required: A valid California driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles is required.
Certification: National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) playground certification may be required within the first year of employment.
Knowledge of: Considerable knowledge of the materials, tools and methods used in general building repair and maintenance; and safe work practices.
Ability to: Safe use and care of a variety of hand and/or power tools and equipment, including but not limited to jack hammers, rollers, tractors, sweepers, and small and large mowers, small skip loaders, trenchers, sand blasters, paint and chemical sprayers. Ability to drive large and small trucks. Perform light and finish carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, and mechanical repair work; lift and/or move heavy objects; read blueprints; work safely, independently and with others; work weekends as needed; read and write English at the level required for successful job performance; work nights, weekends, and holidays if required; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
FACILITIES MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN II
In addition to the knowledge, skills and abilities for Facilities Maintenance Technician I, the following qualifications are required:
Experience: Three years’ experience in the construction trades in one or more disciplines such as HVAC, electrical, and plumbing. Experience in general repair and maintenance working for a public entity or private company in repair or maintenance.
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent and completion of college courses from an accredited college or trade school pertaining to job duties/specifications.
Certifications: Certified Maintenance & Reliability Technician (CMRT) Certification is desirable.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear, walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and move materials, tools and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to handle heights of over 50 feet.
Mental Demands:
While performing the duties of this class, employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or new skills; work under deadlines with constant interruptions; and interact with City staff, other organizations and the public.
All City employees are required to perform assigned Emergency Service duties in the event of an emergency or disaster. Employee must complete required FEMA courses within six months of employment.
