The McGill University Department of Pediatrics in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position as an academic clinician at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical). The successful candidate will be based at the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) and will practice predominantly within the Sleep and Ventilation program. The professorial rank will be determined according to the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. This is a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The Department of Pediatrics is a leader in academic child health. Our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs. The Montreal Children’s Hospital is one of McGill’s major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal. All major pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties are represented at the MCH.

The Division of Pediatric Respiratory Medicine provides a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient services and consists of eight full-time McGill faculty members and several associate staff physicians, delivering multidisciplinary care across the full spectrum of respiratory and sleep disorders in infants, children, and adolescents.

Our Sleep and Ventilation program includes two full-time and several part-time subspecialist physicians, a nurse practitioner, three dedicated nurses, and numerous respiratory therapists within the Montreal Children’s Hospital Sleep Laboratory and Clinic practice.  This team participates in new consultations, follow-up clinical activities, and sleep test interpretations. This advertised position is for a third, full-time pediatric respirologist with training and/or expertise in sleep medicine and/or long-term home ventilation to further supplement the group and this growing field.

The Respiratory Division also operates a Pulmonary Function Testing Laboratory, including advanced physiologic evaluation such as cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). In addition, the Division maintains a robust diagnostic and interventional bronchoscopy program, including airway evaluation, bronchoalveolar lavage, and cryotherapy.

The Division works closely with ENT, Complex Care Pediatrics, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Genetics, Neonatology, Intensive Care, and allied health teams to deliver advanced, integrated pediatric respiratory and sleep medicine care.

The successful candidate will focus on clinical activities in Pediatric Respiratory Medicine and with a significant portion of time in Sleep Medicine, provide outpatient and inpatient care, supervise trainees, and participate in academic rounds and scholarly contributions to the field. Compensation is based on a hybrid model derived in part from fee-for-service billings. This hybrid model provides annual compensation which is significantly above the median pediatric respirology income across Canada.

Job Duties

Clinical Duties

Participation in general pediatric sleep clinics and multidisciplinary clinics, including:

• Complex Sleep–Disordered Breathing Clinic;
• Technology-Dependent / Ventilation Clinics;
• Joint clinics with ENT, Complex Care Pediatrics, and Neurology;
• Interpretation of pediatric polysomnography and other sleep diagnostics;
• Longitudinal management of children requiring long-term non-invasive ventilation, oxygen therapy, or high-flow nasal cannula;
• Coverage of inpatient respiratory consult service (approximately 6–8 weeks per year);
• Participation in weekend respiratory medicine service coverage;
• Optional participation in general respiratory clinics;
• Optional participation in the pediatric flexible bronchoscopy service.

Teaching Duties

Candidates will supervise medical students, residents, and fellows during clinical care and contribute to the Pediatric Respiratory Medicine and Sleep Medicine training programs. Faculty in the Division also plays a key role in interdisciplinary education for nurses, respiratory therapists, and other health professionals. In addition, all faculty in the Department of Pediatrics are responsible for teaching activities for residents and undergraduate medical students.

Academic Duties

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to academic rounds and participate in scholarly activities such as clinical research, quality improvement, program innovation, or education scholarship.

The incumbent will also be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates should:

• Hold an MD degree or equivalent;
• Hold or be eligible for licensure from the Collège des médecins du Québec;
• Have completed specialty training in Pediatrics and Pediatric Respirology, with certification by the Collège des Médecins du Québec or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent);
• Have formal training in Pediatric Sleep Medicine;
• Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families and health care professionals.
