POSITION SUMMARY:
The Civic Engagement Coordinator provides programmatic and operational support to the State Director for Community & Civic Engagement and Executive Program Director in the implementation and ongoing coordination of teen civic engagement programs, including Youth & Government®. This role supports the delivery of high-quality, mission-driven programming that emphasizes leadership development, civic engagement, career exploration, and service learning.
The Civic Engagement Coordinator is responsible for coordinating day-to-day program activities, supporting workshops and events, communicating with participants and program partners, assisting with recruitment and outreach, maintaining program records, and supporting program evaluation. The Coordinator works closely with YMCA staff, volunteers, educators, schools, and community organizations to ensure program activities are organized, responsive, and aligned with established program goals and YMCA standards. The position also provides direct support and mentorship to youth participants and contributes to an inclusive, welcoming, and goal-oriented program culture. The Civic Engagement Coordinator represents the YMCA professionally in schools and community settings and may assist with special projects, statewide initiatives, and national program opportunities as assigned. This position requires strong organizational and communication skills, initiative, sound judgment, and a commitment to expanding equitable access to civic engagement and leadership opportunities for young people across Oʻahu.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND JOB DUTIES:
- Coordinate the day-to-day implementation of the Hawaiʻi Youth & Government program, including scheduling program activities, coordinating with advisors and participants, communicating with schools and partners, and ensuring program activities are delivered effectively.
- Develop educational resources and workshop materials by researching relevant topics, adapting content for different audiences, and creating engaging activities, presentations, and supporting materials.
- Deliver workshops and presentations for students, educators, and community partners using interactive, engaging, and age-appropriate learning strategies.
- Maintain and strengthen established relationships with schools, YMCA branches, and community organizations through regular communication, outreach, meetings, and program coordination.
- Support and coordinate recruitment of students, volunteers, and educators through established school and community partners, information sessions, promotional events, and follow-up communication.
- Create promotional materials and communications to support program awareness, including flyers, emails, social media content, presentations, and other outreach materials.
- Support planning and delivery of statewide events and conferences, including coordinating logistics, communicating with participants and volunteers, preparing materials, and assisting with on-site event operations.
- Develop and deliver additional Youth & Government opportunities for schools, YMCA sites, and community organizations to increase civic engagement, program awareness, and access to Youth & Government opportunities.
- Support alumni and college-aged student engagement initiatives to strengthen program delivery, leadership opportunities, and continued connection to Youth & Government.
- Maintain accurate program records and assist with evaluation activities by tracking participation, maintaining documentation and resources, and collecting feedback.
- Represent the YMCA professionally within schools and community settings by building positive relationships, communicating the YMCA’s mission and programs, and serving as a knowledgeable and welcoming representative of the Association.
- Participate in and support the success of the Annual Campaign.
- Support staff and program needs across the Association as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Skills/Knowledge Required:
- Strong understanding of youth, teen, and young adult development and group facilitation.
- Ability to foster a supportive, inclusive, and culturally responsive environment.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to demonstrate leadership, initiative, and sound judgment while working with diverse teams and stakeholders.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and general office software.
- Pursuing or completed bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Government, Education, Communications, or a related field; or equivalent relevant work experience.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring, leading, or working with youth, students, volunteers, or community groups.
- Familiarity with local educational institutions, workforce development programs, and community-based organizations.
- Experience working with diverse youth populations, especially high school juniors/seniors and college-aged young adults, required.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to engage effectively with youth, parents, educators, and partners.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Ability to work some evenings and weekends as needed.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and remain active during program hours.
Education/Training:
- At least 20 years of age
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Two years of college and/or at least two years of experience in school-age programs
- Completion of all mandatory Teen Leader and Site Coordinator training
- CPR, AED, and First Aid certified (can be obtained upon hire)
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
Child Protection Commitment
The YMCA requires all staff to share responsibility for preventing child abuse by upholding professional boundaries, completing mandatory Praesidium training, and reporting concerns. All candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive background screening, including criminal and sex offender checks.
This position and its pay are dependent on the availability of funds and continuation of the contracted program. The current contract provides programming for June 2026 - July 2027.
