Job Description:
The Heavy Haul, Rigging & Crane Supervisor is responsible for leading, coordinating, and standardizing heavy haul, rigging, crane, lifting, loading, unloading, and large-scale material handling activities across Tomball Controls’ manufacturing facilities in Von Ormy, Seguin, Pleasanton, and San Angelo.
Based primarily at the Von Ormy facility, this role provides hands-on leadership and technical oversight to ensure all lifting and material movement operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and consistently. The Supervisor establishes and enforces standards for rigging practices, crane operations, equipment inspections, load control, sling and hardware selection, employee training, and resource utilization. This position is also responsible for coordinating heavy haul personnel and equipment across multiple facilities, ensuring adequate coverage for production, shipping, and major material handling activities.
Key Responsibilities:
Heavy Haul & Rigging Leadership
- Provide leadership and direction for heavy haul, rigging, crane, and large-scale material handling activities across Von Ormy, Seguin, Pleasanton, and San Angelo facilities.
- Coordinate the safe movement of generator enclosures, skid frames, tanks, engines, fabricated assemblies, equipment, and other oversized or heavy components.
- Oversee loading and unloading operations involving flatbeds, step-decks, lowboys, specialized trailers, and other transportation equipment.
- Ensure all loads are properly evaluated prior to lifting, transporting, loading, or unloading, including verification of weight, dimensions, center of gravity, lifting points, equipment capacity, travel paths, and site conditions.
- Lead planning efforts for complex, non-routine, or high-risk lifts and ensure all activities remain within established rigging and equipment limitations.
- Serve as the primary technical resource for heavy haul, rigging, and lifting operations across all facilities.
- Provide direct, hands-on support when operational conditions require additional leadership or technical expertise.
Crane & Material Handling Equipment Oversight
- Ensure cranes, hoists, forklifts, telehandlers, gantry systems, and other material handling equipment are used safely and appropriately.
- Reinforce proper operating procedures, load chart requirements, lifting techniques, equipment capacity limitations, and manufacturer guidelines.
- Verify required pre-use inspections are completed and documented.
- Identify unsafe equipment conditions and ensure affected equipment is removed from service until corrective action is completed.
- Partner with Maintenance, Safety, and Operations teams to address equipment deficiencies and support preventive maintenance efforts.
Rigging Equipment Management
- Establish and maintain standardized practices for the selection, inspection, storage, identification, and use of rigging equipment, including:
- Synthetic web, round, wire rope, and chain slings
- Shackles, hooks, chain falls, hoists, come-alongs, lifting clamps, and tag lines
- Spreader bars, lifting beams, below-the-hook devices, and other lifting accessories
- Ensure all rigging equipment is properly rated, identifiable, inspected, maintained, and removed from service when damaged, expired, or otherwise unsuitable for use.
- Maintain a consistent process for periodic inspections, documentation, tracking, and replacement of rigging equipment.
- Train employees on proper rigging selection and how factors such as sling angle, configuration, attachment methods, center of gravity, and load characteristics impact working load limits.
Lift Planning & Risk Management
- Establish expectations for pre-lift planning and identify lifts requiring additional review, engineering support, or documented lift plans.
- Ensure teams assess hazards including pinch points, suspended loads, overhead obstructions, equipment clearances, ground conditions, travel paths, personnel exposure, and operational interferences.
- Establish and enforce exclusion zones and ensure qualified spotters and signal persons are assigned when required.
- Promote effective communication among operators, riggers, drivers, spotters, and support personnel throughout lifting operations.
Loading, Unloading & Shipping Support
- Lead and coordinate heavy haul activities supporting inbound and outbound logistics operations.
- Coordinate closely with Production, Materials, Logistics, Yard Operations, Quality, Shipping, Maintenance, and Plant Leadership teams.
- Review upcoming shipment and delivery requirements to proactively identify resource, equipment, staging, or space constraints.
- Establish and maintain standardized loading and unloading practices across all facilities.
- Ensure products are protected from damage during staging, transportation, loading, and unloading activities.
- Support efficient trailer loading strategies that minimize unnecessary handling and material movement while maintaining safety and quality standards.
- Coordinate yard and facility movements required to maintain production and shipping flow.
Multi-Site Operational Support
- Provide hands-on leadership support at any facility when manpower shortages, vacancies, absenteeism, workload spikes, or other operational needs create coverage gaps.
- Coordinate with plant leadership to temporarily deploy qualified personnel between facilities as necessary to maintain safety, productivity, shipping performance, and customer commitments.
- Travel as needed to support operations, training initiatives, major lifts, heavy haul projects, and leadership coverage at any Tomball Controls location.
- Serve as a visible leader in promoting safe work practices, operational excellence, and consistency across all manufacturing locations.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in industrial rigging, crane operations, heavy haul transportation, heavy equipment operation, or large-component material handling.
- Demonstrated hands-on knowledge of slings, shackles, hooks, hoists, cranes, and other rigging equipment.
- Prior experience leading or supervising employees in a manufacturing, construction, industrial, heavy equipment, or similar environment.
- Strong ability to assess lifting conditions, identify hazards, and recognize unsafe rigging and material handling practices.
- Strong planning, scheduling, prioritization, and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and resources effectively.
- Ability to collaborate successfully across multiple departments, teams, and facility locations.
- Valid driver's license with the ability to travel routinely between Von Ormy, Seguin, Pleasanton, and San Angelo as business needs require.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in active manufacturing, fabrication, warehouse, shipping, and outdoor yard environments while consistently utilizing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ability to walk production facilities and outdoor yards for extended periods and perform activities such as climbing, bending, stooping, and accessing equipment to inspect operations.
- Ability to work safely around cranes, forklifts, heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, and large fabricated products.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions typical of South Texas operations.
- Schedule flexibility is required to support early shipments, late deliveries, overtime assignments, weekend work, and unusual heavy haul or material handling activities as business demands dictate.
