Full-Time Life Enrichment Specialist
$16.25 - $20.78
Expected Hours of Work
The position is full-time, Tuesday – Saturday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm, with some evenings and Sundays.
This position creates, coordinates, and facilitates meaningful engagement activities with residents in Complete Living Care. Conducts resident assessments, completes care plans and documentation, and delivers services in a resident-centered approach. Provides resident engagement using one-on-one interactions, small group activities, and large group events. Uses the dimensions of wellness, intergenerational programming, and industry best practices to develop monthly calendars. Collaborates with members of the Life Enrichment, Transportation, Supportive Living, and Wellness and Enrichment teams. Ensures that all responsibilities are delivered in compliance with all Commonwealth of Virginia standards and regulations for Complete Living Care.
Requirements
- Must possess an Associate’s Degree (Bachelor’s degree preferred) or at least two years’ experience facilitating and coordinating programs for older adults in a supportive environment.
- Must possess experience and/or a strong desire to work with residents who have dementia and/or physical limitations.
- Must be able to work effectively with leadership, the Wellness and Enrichment team, staff, residents, volunteers, and community members.
- Ensures activity program complies with state and federal regulations.
- Must have computer experience and proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
- Must be physically able to transport residents in wheelchairs. Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing. Must be able to understand and carry out oral and written assignments; must be able to perform the duties listed in the job description with limited supervision.
- Self-motivated, able to schedule time wisely and accommodate changes.
- Must have a pleasant personality, enjoy working with people, have good manners, and be able to deal tactfully with others.
- Must have a current Virginia Driver’s license in good standing.
- Must have First Aid and CPR certification (or be willing to obtain certification within 90 days of employment).
- Additionally, candidates must be willing to participate in continuing education and professional development opportunities.
A. Essential Functions
1. Develops and facilitates meaningful life enrichment programming based on needs and preferences of individual residents. Programs must be based on significant resident input, be widely varied and diverse, and be responsive to significant events/issues in residents' lives.
2. Utilizes a balance of one-to-one interactions, small group activities and large group events to deliver meaningful engagement with residents. Programs incorporate the dimensions of wellness, intergenerational programming and industry best practices.
3. Facilitates the orientation, assessment, and documentation for Complete Living Care Residents. This is completed by:
i. Providing orientation to new move-ins.
ii. Completing the initial assessment with new residents and patients for medical chart. Transfers information into the MDS System for Federal compliance.
iii. Establishing a relationship with the resident or patient to build upon a plan of care regarding activities and meaningful engagement.
iv. Completing activity documentation for resident care charts (assessment and progress note). Transfers information into the MDS System for Federal compliance.
v. Assisting nursing by completing all documentation for MDS section F, preferences for daily concerns regarding the welfare of the patient or resident.
vi. Completing activity preferences and participation for each Complete Living Care residents.
4. Completes the annual comprehensive assessments for Complete Living Care residents.
5. As requested by manager, attends family meetings to provide information on programs and services that Life Enrichment offer.
6. Coordinates the Life Enrichment portion of the Care Plans for Complete Living Care. Consults with others on the Life Enrichment team and others on the Supportive Living team to ensure care plan goals are obtainable through:
i. Reassess resident's needs and provide input to the Care Plan Team.
ii. Maintains required documentation in the medical chart within time frame.
iii. Generates participation reports and obtain wellness center reports for care plans.
iv. Evaluates resident needs for any adaptive equipment and inform other program staff and care staff. Informs supervisor if equipment needs to be purchased.
v. Communicates and updates other Life Enrichment staff of changes with Residents' status.
7. Creates innovative programming and services through collaboration with Wellness Center staff, Pastoral Care staff, Arts & Education Manager, volunteers, families, Nursing Staff, and the larger community:
i. Uses targeted areas of resident's assessments in planning program calendar.
ii. Provides for community events, arts, educational series, trips and outings, exercise, games, music, videos, and other therapeutic activities in accordance with resident capabilities and interest.
iii. Actively seeks and shares innovative activity ideas with the team utilizing industry resources.
iv. Works closely with the larger Life Enrichment team and CLC team in planning special events, such as Fall Fest and the annual all-campus events.
v. Identifies volunteer needs for programs and makes arrangements to schedule the volunteers.
vi. Arranges activities and materials for volunteers when necessary.
vii. Coordinates resident outings on a regular basis, utilizing all safety precautions.
viii. Provides wheelchair transportation for residents to and from activity programs, utilizing all safety precautions.
ix. Ensures evening and weekend activities are coordinated and facilitated as needed.
x. Receives approval from supervisor prior to purchasing materials.
xi. Evaluates programs by soliciting resident, family, and staff feedback.
xii. Implements programs that acknowledge major life events (birthdays, anniversaries, etc.).
8. Implements one-on-one engagement with assigned residents.
9. Provides regular supervision to VMRC volunteers, work-study students, and interns; offers mentoring, support, and guidance through:
i. Assigns approved volunteers to assist with various programming and oversees their participation with residents to ensure safety and meaningful engagement.
ii. Coordinates work assignments for student interns and work-study.
iii. Ensures that students shadow one-to-ones and demonstrate effective communication with the residents.
iv. Provides materials for one-to-one activities with residents.
v. Works closely with manager to ensure intern requirements are met.
vi. Provides information for evaluations to supervisor or evaluate students’ performance when necessary.
10. Meets with supervisor at least on a monthly basis.
11. Meets with Life Enrichment Team on a regular basis.
B. Essential Functions – Resident & Customer Relations
1. Welcomes new residents in a timely manner.
2. Communicates effectively regarding activities and promotes activities regularly:
i. Provides a monthly calendar for each room and a household bulletin board.
ii. Posts program reminders on dining tables at meal times for special events or changes.
iii. Posts trips and special events sign-up sheets.
iv. Distributes announcements to residents and care staff in mailboxes.
v. Posts changes in schedules and notifies appropriate persons.
3. Ensures a high level of satisfaction with activities. Utilizes a variety of means to gather ideas and input. Evaluates satisfaction on a regular basis and obtains feedback.
i. Orientation.
ii. Attends Resident Council meetings, as invited.
iii. Residents’ input in activity planning.
iv. Variety of programs.
v. Diverse days and times for programs.
vi. Documents daily residents’ participation.
vii. Service Plan meetings.
4. Maintains open communication and positive relationships with supervisor, other Life Enrichment staff, care staff, families, volunteers, and community to best meet the residents’ needs.
5. Provides one-to-one contact/visitation with residents on a regular basis, promoting use of facility resources and programs.
C. Essential Functions – Safety / Emergency Procedures
1. Ensures that residents who are in wheelchairs are strapped securely in the vehicle to ensure a safe trip.
2. Ensures oxygen tanks are properly secured in all vehicles.
3. Demonstrates knowledge of emergency procedures and safe use of equipment.
4. Handles residents with care at all times.
5. Maintains an acceptable DMV driving record.
D. General
1. Complies with all VMRC and departmental policies & guidelines in a conscientious manner.
2. Actively engages residents in a meaningful, positive, and compassionate manner while ensuring an environment of resident-centered respect and appreciation.
3. Maintains confidentiality of all resident care and protected health information. Reports known or suspected incidents of unauthorized disclosure of confidential information to supervisor or designee.
4. Handles responsibility and maintains a positive, professional and collaborative working relationship with residents, families, administration, peers and co-workers.
5. Demonstrates good attendance and maintains “Employee in Good Standing.”
6. Uses correct body mechanics to prevent injury to self, residents and other staff.
7. Assumes responsibility for and actively participates in staff development (professional growth) and continuing education to keep skills and required certification(s) up-to-date.
8. Demonstrates computer skills necessary to complete job tasks/responsibilities.
9. Attends all required in-services and department staff meetings.
10. Follows emergency and evacuation procedures.
11. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
