CUNY has embarked on a multi-billion-dollar, multi-year capital design and construction program across its 26 campuses. The Design and Construction Management Interns are key members of the project management team in the Office of Facilities Planning, Construction, and Management (FPCM), playing a vital role in the successful implementation of this program. They are actively engaged in supporting the management of projects ranging from less than $1M to over $50M, targeting all elements of the 26 Colleges that make up the City University of New York system. The Interns support Project Managers and Assistant Directors in implementing capital-funded construction projects including the design and construction of new buildings, renovation projects, infrastructure projects, energy performance and decarbonization projects, repair projects, and capital maintenance projects at CUNY campuses.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Project Manager and/or Assistant Directors:

This captures projects from initial inception, designer procurement, design, construction manager procurement, contractor bidding and selection, and construction through final closeout

  • Learn to use, enter, maintain, and access information in CUNY’s PMWeb-based project management system. A necessary element in modern construction project design and execution, our interns use a commercial web-based project management system

  • Participate in design and construction meetings, develop and/or review meeting minutes, action items, and progress to ensure that projects stay on schedule and under budget

  • Apply CUNY’s project management procedures and standards using appropriate methods and technologies

  • Communicate effectively with all project participants, including end users, designers, construction managers and contractors, as applicable

  • Support the PM and AD to ensure they meet standards for performance (time, cost, quality)

  • Perform work indoors and outdoors under various environmental conditions, including extreme temperature conditions, climbing ladders and scaffolds, and working in close spaces as necessary to advance project(s). Work may require driving to work locations

  • Conduct project estimation and establish project budget

  • Document project requirements and assist in preparing project design specifications, Requests for Proposal (RFPs) or other consultant procurement solicitations

  • During the course of a construction project, analyze and document change orders

  • May function as an Expeditor, completing required documentation to obtain appropriate licenses and certificates, assisting in dealings with the NYC Department of Buildings and other authorities

  • Inspect ongoing projects, collecting data on project status for review by management

  • Collect and transmit data on project progress, utilizing appropriate technology

  • Collect and maintain information on vendor activities, including time spent, tasks performed, and billing information

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Core Competencies:

  • Enrolled in a CUNY school with at least 48 credits towards a Bachelor’s degree

  • Junior or Senior in good standing within CCNY’s Grove School of Engineering or Spitzer School of Architecture or NYCCT’s Architecture, Construction Management Technology, Facilities Management, or Mechanical Engineering Technology undergraduate degree program

  • Strong technical and analytical skills

  • Computer skills, including email, spreadsheets, databases, project management, and presentation packages

  • Excellent written and verbal communication

  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multitask

  • Work under pressure and meet multiple deadlines

  • Prioritize competing work

  • Self and team motivator

  • Be a team player

  • Set project priorities and adjust implementation strategies

  • Work effectively with staff, associates, and internal and external constituents

  • Alert, observant, looking for ways to improve processes

  • Out-of-the-box thinker, creative, inventive, and adaptable to varied situations
