The Position

The Transmission & Interconnection Manager will support the development of greenfield transmission projects by performing power flow and related planning analyses to evaluate system needs, constraints, and solution options. This role will play a key part in supporting the transmission planning and interconnection process, providing technical analyses that inform project feasibility, interconnection strategy, and early-stage development decisions. This role is open to candidates based in Houston, TX or remote and reports to the Senior Director of Transmission Strategy.

Responsibilities

• Lead and perform internal transmission planning studies, including power flow, contingency (N-1 and N-1-1), short circuit, and voltage/reactive analyses, to screen potential points of interconnection and inform project feasibility and design.

• Develop and maintain study cases and transmission system models across the portfolio, ensuring load, generation, and planned upgrade assumptions are current and consistent with ISO/RTO and utility base cases.

• Prepare, file, and manage interconnection and transmission service requests, including application packages, technical data, site control documentation, deposits, and required study agreements.

• Own the portfolio interconnection tracker, including milestones, readiness requirements, payment forecasts, financial security postings, decision points, and queue timeline slippage, with regular updates to the development team and leadership.

• Serve as a primary technical point of contact with transmission owners, utilities, and ISO/RTO interconnection staff; lead scoping meetings and study review calls, and negotiate study assumptions, results, and mitigation.

• Review and diagnose ISO/RTO and utility interconnection study results (feasibility, system impact, facilities, and cluster studies), independently validate findings, and test and propose alternative transmission mitigations to reduce cost and schedule risk.

• Evaluate network upgrade cost allocation, affected system impacts, and restudy risk, and recommend queue strategy decisions to proceed, modify, suspend, or withdraw requests.

• Support negotiation and execution of interconnection agreements, facilities study agreements, and related contracts, working with Legal and Commercial on technical, cost, and milestone provisions.

• Interpret and apply ISO/RTO tariffs, business practice manuals, planning criteria, and FERC interconnection requirements, and track tariff and process reforms that could impact the company's development portfolio.

• Coordinate with HVDC Engineering specialists to develop and validate models necessary for interconnection analysis.

• Structure, procure, and manage consultants performing interconnection and planning studies, including review of deliverables for quality and accuracy.

• Actively participate in RTO stakeholder meetings, planning working groups, and industry forums, and represent Grid United's positions on interconnection and planning matters.

• Provide technical input to Development, Engineering, and Commercial teams on routing, sizing, point of interconnection selection, cost estimates, and due diligence on potential acquisition targets.

• Mentor and review the work of Transmission & Interconnection Engineers, and establish study standards and documentation practices for the team.

Desired Experience and Skills

• BS in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university with an emphasis on Power Systems is required

• 5+ years of experience in transmission planning, interconnection, or transmission service, including direct experience filing and managing interconnection requests at a developer, utility, ISO/RTO, or consultancy

• Hands-on proficiency with at least one of the common grid analytics tools like PSS/E, PSLF, Powergem TARA, or PowerWorld Simulator; familiarity with production cost tools such as PROMOD, GridView, or PLEXOS is a plus

• Working knowledge of generator and load interconnection processes, cluster studies, and ISO/RTO tariffs across multiple regions (e.g., MISO, SPP, PJM, ERCOT, and the non-RTO West)

• Demonstrated ability to build productive working relationships with utility and ISO/RTO staff and to represent an organization in technical discussions and negotiations

• Familiarity with NERC reliability standards, regional planning criteria, and state and federal regulatory frameworks applicable to electric power systems

• Planning level knowledge of HVDC technology and systems, substation configurations, transmission line design and ratings, and cost estimates

• Experience managing consultants and external study vendors, including scope, budget, and deliverable review

• Highly organized, with the ability to track many concurrent requests, deadlines, and financial commitments with precision

• Commercially minded, creative individual with the willingness and flexibility to work in a fast-paced work environment with constantly shifting priorities

• Self-starter willing to persevere with solving the problem at hand under ambiguity and often no readily available data

• Strong communication skills with the ability to challenge assumptions and translate complex technical findings into business recommendations

• Prior supervisory or mentoring experience preferred

• MS in Electrical Engineering or MBA preferred; PE license a plus

• Ability to travel up to 30%
