Job Description
Position Summary:
Rockwell Automation is seeking a senior hardware engineering leader to help shape the next generation of industrial control platforms and the organization that delivers them. You will lead managers and multidisciplinary teams responsible for PLC, I/O, and communication products while influencing technology choices, product investments, engineering practices, and talent strategy across a global development organization.
This is not solely a program-execution role. You will balance near-term product delivery with longer-term improvements to our technology platforms, development system, and organizational capability. The role is intended for a leader who wants meaningful operating scope and the opportunity to grow into broader engineering responsibility. You will have meaningful autonomy to experiment and drive enterprise-level change in this role. This role is designed for a curious leader who builds fast-cycle experiments to test ideas, learn from evidence with their team, and scale what works.
This is a high visibility role that will challenge you to work across multiple investments and time horizons to solve problems and deliver product. As such, this role will report to the VP of Hardware Engineering who will serve as an active coach, mentor, and advocate for you and your career.
Your Responsibilities:
- Build organizational depth: Lead and develop 3–4 managers or team leads and their hardware engineering teams, strengthening performance, succession, technical capability, and accountability. Grow talent to take on the next set of complex problems we have yet to encounter.
- Deliver complex products: Own hardware execution from requirements and architecture through validation, certification, industrialization, and release through your management team. Connect pieces across different investments and drive simplicity and reduce overlap whenever possible. Increase reuse.
- Shape consequential decisions: Influence product investments, technology selections, engineering practices, and resource trade-offs across multiple programs and time horizons.
- Improve the engineering system: Remove barriers and improve predictability, quality, cost, speed of learning, and development effectiveness.
- Lead across boundaries: Partner with Product Management, Quality, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and global engineering teams to make trade-offs that produce the best customer and business outcomes.
In this role, success means:
- Product investments make visible progress against customer, business, quality, cost, and schedule outcomes. We deliver early and more whenever possible.
- Managers and technical leaders take greater ownership, make stronger decisions, and build deeper teams.
- The broader hardware organization maintains its predictability, but becomes more scalable, efficient, and effective because of improvements you help lead.
The Essentials - You Will Have:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related technical field or equivalent years of relevant work experience.
- Legal authorization to work in the US is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, not now or in the future, for this job opening.
- Ability to travel, including internationally up to 10% of time.
The Preferred - You Might Also Have:
- Typically requires 8+ years of relevant engineering leadership experience.
- Demonstrated success leading multiple engineering teams or leaders through complex electronic product development, industrialization, and release, or leading a larger single team in a similar way.
- Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related technical field.
- Experience delivering products in regulated environments (e.g., CE, IEC 61010).
- Experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies (SAFe).
- Experience developing embedded hardware systems.
- Experience with industrial automation products or complex system-level designs.
- Experience working with global, distributed teams.
- Experience with project leadership or program management responsibilities.
- Experience with functional safety (IEC 61508 / IEC 61511) and/or cybersecurity standards (IEC 62443).
- Experience managing external partners or 3rd-party engineering resources.
What We Offer:
- Health Insurance including Medical, Dental and Vision
- 401k
- Paid Time off
- Parental and Caregiver Leave
- Flexible Work Schedule where you will work with your leader to enjoy a work schedule that can be flexible with your personal life.
