About the Role

We are looking for an experienced mechanical design engineer to advance existing payload designs towards flight-ready hardware and develop new ground support equipment (GSE). Working closely with physicists, electronics engineers and system engineers, you will understand how our existing systems perform, identify opportunities for improvement and implement them in the mechanical design. 

Your Responsibilities

• Develop mechanical designs for space payloads and GSE, including detailed CAD models and manufacturing drawings.
• Design small optical mounts, precise fits and tolerances, and adhesive joints.
• Select suitable materials, considering manufacturing, assembly and operating conditions.
• Support manufacturing, assembly, integration and testing (MAIT) through assembly instructions and technical guidance, with occasional practical involvement.
• Maintain clear design documentation and coordinate mechanical interfaces with the interdisciplinary team.

Your Profile

• Solid professional experience in mechanical design and precision engineering, ideally around 5–7 years. Equivalent relevant experience is welcome.
• A degree in mechanical engineering or a related field, or comparable practical qualifications.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD and manufacturing drawings, with a sound understanding of tolerances and material selection.
• A careful approach to precision mechanics, strong attention to detail and an appreciation for clear, accurate documentation.
• Good English communication skills and the ability to work independently within a multidisciplinary team.

Nice to Have

• Experience with structural or thermal analysis using finite element methods (FEM).
• Experience with space hardware or its development and verification processes.

These are optional skills; we support your onboarding and development in these areas. Experience with any relevant CAD or analysis software is welcome. Our specific tools can be learned on the job.

The minimum gross salary for this position is € 3.157,47 per month (based on full-time employment) in accordance with the collective agreement. However, there is a willingness to offer a higher salary depending on experience and qualifications.
