Description
Typical Responsibilities:
- Monitor surveillance cameras, alarms, electronic doors, gates, locks, and intercom systems.
- Control inmate movement and maintain security within restricted areas.
- Screen visitors, staff, and vehicles entering secure facilities.
- Maintain accurate logs, reports, inmate movement records, and security documentation.
- Respond to security incidents and communicate with deputies, supervisors, and emergency personnel.
- Issue and track facility keys, radios, and security equipment.
- Observe and report unusual inmate behavior, medical concerns, or security risks.
- Conduct routine security checks and ensure proper operation of control center equipment.
- Maintain confidentiality while following all applicable policies, procedures, and regulations.
Minimum Requirements:
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
- Experience in corrections, law enforcement, dispatching, security operations, or a related field is preferred.
- Must have and maintain Dispatch Certification through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (VDCJS) within the timeframe established by the Sheriff's Office.
- Must successfully pass a background check before any offer of employment or promotion.
- This position is safety-sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City's current substance abuse policy.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton's criteria if required for assigned duties.
Additional Requirements:
- The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during city emergencies or at the direction of the City Manager or designee, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
