Description
Location: Vancouver, BC
Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent
Industry: Manufacturing & Construction
Company Size: Approximately 150 employees
The Opportunity
Picture an established, privately owned Vancouver company that combines manufacturing operations with commercial and industrial construction projects.
With approximately 150 employees across production, field operations, project management, and administration, this is a busy, well-run business with a strong reputation for quality work and long-standing client relationships.
The team is practical, friendly, and hardworking. Leadership is approachable, decisions are made without unnecessary layers, and people take pride in getting things done.
The Controller would be a key member of the management team, working closely with the owners and operational leaders to oversee the company's financial activities.
This isn't a position where you'll spend all day producing reports. You'll be involved in the business, working with project teams, understanding costs, improving financial processes, and helping leadership make informed decisions.
What You'll Be Responsible For
Financial Management & Reporting
-
Oversee day-to-day accounting operations and financial reporting.
-
Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
-
Prepare financial statements, management reports, and financial analysis.
-
Develop annual budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections.
-
Monitor working capital, banking relationships, and cash requirements.
-
Provide financial reporting and recommendations directly to ownership and senior leadership.
Project & Manufacturing Accounting
-
Oversee job costing, work-in-progress reporting, and project profitability.
-
Work with Project Managers to monitor budgets, costs, commitments, and financial performance.
-
Review manufacturing costs, inventory, labour, and production expenses.
-
Support accurate revenue recognition and project billing.
-
Identify cost variances and help operational teams understand their financial results.
-
Improve reporting across manufacturing and construction activities.
Accounting Operations & Team Leadership
-
Lead and support the accounting team.
-
Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger activities.
-
Maintain internal controls and accurate financial records.
-
Coordinate year-end activities with external accountants and auditors.
-
Improve accounting systems, reporting tools, and financial procedures.
-
Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
Business & Leadership Support
-
Work closely with ownership, operations, and project management teams.
-
Provide financial input on equipment purchases, capital investments, and business decisions.
-
Support pricing, margin analysis, and profitability reviews.
-
Help leadership plan for future growth and operational requirements.
-
Translate financial information into clear, practical recommendations.
What We're Looking For
-
7+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
-
Previous experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior Finance Manager.
-
Experience within manufacturing, construction, or another project-based business.
-
Strong understanding of job costing, WIP reporting, inventory, and financial controls.
-
Experience managing budgets, forecasts, cash flow, and financial reporting.
-
Demonstrated ability to lead and develop an accounting team.
-
Strong Excel skills and experience with accounting or ERP systems.
-
Confidence working directly with owners and senior operational leaders.
-
CPA designation preferred.
The Right Personality
We're looking for someone who enjoys being part of the business, not just managing the numbers.
You'll be approachable, organized, and comfortable working with everyone from production managers and Project Managers to senior leadership.
You can explain financial information clearly, ask good questions, and identify issues before they become larger problems.
You'll bring sound judgment, a practical approach, and the confidence to make recommendations while remaining hands-on with the accounting function.
A positive attitude and a sense of humour would fit well with this type of team.
What Makes This Type of Role Attractive?
-
An established, privately owned Vancouver business.
-
A varied operation combining manufacturing and construction.
-
Direct access to ownership and senior leadership.
-
Broad responsibility across accounting, finance, and operational reporting.
-
An opportunity to improve systems and influence business decisions.
-
A friendly, collaborative workplace with experienced operational teams.
-
A stable, long-term leadership position with room to grow.
