Structural/Civil Engineer

The Structural/Civil Engineer provides structural and civil engineering services for BYU Physical Facilities, with approximately 50% focused on structural engineering and 50% on campus civil engineering design and project management.

Structural responsibilities will include acting as an owner-side technical resource; reviewing plans, specifications, and calculations prepared by outside structural consultants; performing in-house analysis and design for campus remodeling and renovation projects; and preparing, signing, and sealing engineering documents within the Structural/Civil Engineer’s responsible charge and areas of competence.

Civil responsibilities include planning and designing campus site and utility improvements; preparing plans, specifications, cost estimates, and bid documents; managing work orders and projects through design, construction, and closeout; reviewing consultant prepared construction documents; and coordinating consultants, contractors, campus stakeholders, and public agencies. This position ensures work complies with applicable codes, BYU standards, project requirements, budgets, and schedules while protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the campus community and visiting public.

What you’ll do in this position:

Structural Engineering Review and Owner Representation

  • Review consultant-prepared structural drawings, specifications, calculations, and geotechnical recommendations at key design and construction phases. Evaluate code compliance, BYU standards, completeness, coordination, constructability, durability, and cost.
  • Prepare clear written owner-side comments and recommendations, and coordinate resolution of structural issues with the consultant engineer of record, architects, other engineers, contractors, inspectors, and authorities. The consultant engineer of record retains responsibility for the consultant’s design and sealed documents.
  • Support structural consultant selection and scope development, peer reviews, existing-condition assessments, renovation planning, and evaluation of unforeseen field conditions.

In-House Structural Engineering Design

  • Analyze and design structural systems and components for assigned new construction, renovations, repairs, equipment supports, foundations, retaining structures, and other campus projects. Account for applicable gravity, wind, seismic, snow, soil, and other loads.
  • Prepare structural calculations, drawings, details, specifications, cost estimates, and supporting documents, coordinating design requirements with architectural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and geotechnical disciplines.
  • Perform field verification, structural observations, and condition assessments; recommend repairs or strengthening when needed. Sign and seal documents prepared under your responsible charge and within your Utah licensure and competence and refer specialized or higher-risk work to qualified consultants.

Civil Engineering Design and Technical Services

  • Plan and design campus site and utility improvements, including streets, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, parking lots, grading, drainage, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, culinary water, irrigation, and related infrastructure.
  • Prepare civil plans, specifications, cost estimates, and bid documents. Review consultant-prepared documents for applicable codes, BYU standards, project requirements, constructability, and coordination with existing campus utilities and infrastructure.
  • Conduct field investigations, condition assessments, engineering analyses, and construction observations; recommend repair, replacement, rehabilitation, or improvement. Help maintain civil standards, details, specifications, and design criteria.

Civil Project and Work Order Management

  • Manage assigned work orders and projects from planning and design through construction and closeout, keeping scope, schedule, budget, and stakeholder communication on track.
  • Coordinate with campus clients, Physical Facilities teams, architects, engineers, contractors, consultants, and public agencies. Procure consulting services, define scopes and deliverables, review proposals and invoices, and monitor consultant performance.
  • Review submittals, requests for information, substitutions, change proposals, and record documents. Assist with construction observations, inspections, punch lists, and acceptance of completed work, and communicate project decisions and issues to stakeholders.

What qualifies you for this role:

Required

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or structural engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Current Utah Professional Structural Engineer license.
  • At least 8-10 years of progressively responsible professional engineering experience, including substantial commercial or institutional structural design experience and civil/site design or project management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing structural calculations and construction documents and coordinating structural design with architectural and other engineering disciplines.
  • Advanced knowledge of structural analysis and design using current adopted building codes and referenced standards, including ASCE 7 and applicable ACI, AISC, TMS, and NDS provisions.
  • Strong knowledge of civil/site engineering principles, construction practices, codes, permitting, and utility coordination.
  • Ability to review complex plans and calculations, identify technical and coordination risks, and communicate clear, defensible owner-side recommendations.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and relevant structural analysis and design software; ability to learn and use BYU project, document-control, and work-order systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, organization, judgment, collaboration, and management of multiple concurrent assignments.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to access active construction sites and existing facilities.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in structural engineering or civil engineering with structural emphasis.
  • Current Utah Professional Structural Engineer and Professional Engineer licenses.
  • 10-15 years of combined civil and structural engineering experience, including owner-side plan review, commercial or institutional building design, renovation, assessment, and construction administration.
  • Experience in a university, institutional, commercial, government, or facilities-management environment.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D and experience with Revit or other building information modeling workflows.
  • Experience with seismic evaluation and retrofit, reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry, wood, foundations, retaining structures, and investigation or repair of existing structures.
