Description of Work

Supervise all Maintenance Technicians within the Maintenance Department. Develop budgets and project lists for the Maintenance Department. Oversee maintenance, repair, and renovation projects by both full-time and part-time
staff and volunteers. Maintain electrical power and lighting systems. Ensure compliance with OSHA/EPA rules by all maintenance and volunteer staff. Serve as back-up to the Assistant Director on all maintenance, repair, and safety-related tasks, including leading emergency preparedness efforts.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1. Oversee the installation and maintenance of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, IT, communications, structural, and other facility systems throughout the Battleship Memorial.

2. Direct Maintenance Department staff, volunteers, and community service groups supporting the upkeep of the Battleship and surrounding grounds.

3. Develop departmental budget and work schedules while effectively allocating resources to meet maintenance and preservation needs.

4. Maintain electrical systems and emergency systems and serve as the technical liaison for the Battleship.

5. Serve as the Memorial’s Safety Officer, ensuring safe conditions; assist with accident investigations, safety mitigation, and SDS compliance.

6. Supervise Night Watch staff and ensure the site is properly secured and maintained outside of regular operating hours.

7. Interact positively with visitors, answer questions about the Battleship and its history, assist during medical emergencies, and support special events and activities at the Memorial.

Recruitment Range: $50,088.00 - $68,932.00

Candidates meet the minimum qualifications of this position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. Vacancy specific knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) and/or management preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following are preferred:

  • Experience overseeing maintenance or facilities operations for a large, complex, or historic facility.

  • Experience working with historic preservation, restoration, or the maintenance of historically significant structures.

  • Experience supervising skilled trades staff and coordinating contractors, volunteers, or outside work groups.

  • Experience developing and managing maintenance budgets, capital projects, and long-term facility maintenance plans.

  • Broad technical knowledge across multiple trades, with the ability to troubleshoot complex facility issues and coordinate specialized repairs.

Position/Physical Requirements

  • Must be available to work the schedule of Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm with occasional weekends and holidays required as needed.

  • Must be able to work frequently in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small, enclosed rooms, sewage and water line pipes, and other confined areas as work is required to function in narrow aisles or passageways.

  • Must be able to occasionally work while wearing a respirator.

  • Must be able to work being subject to extreme heat, hazards, noise, oils, vibration, inside environmental conditions, and outside environmental conditions.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma

AND

three (3) years of progressive experience in facility maintenance or construction including journey level experience in at least three (3) building or mechanical trades;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements:

May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
