Job Summary
This role focuses on low-level Windows platform development and system diagnostics across application, OS, driver, and firmware layers. The engineer will design and develop Windows system tools and components that collect, analyze, and visualize low-level platform data, while also leading deep debugging and root-cause analysis for performance, power, and stability issues.
The role requires strong Windows internals knowledge, system programming skills, and hands-on experience with trace analysis and cross-layer debugging. The candidate is expected to independently clarify technical requirements, explore unknown areas, and deliver high-quality, well-tested solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in full software development lifecycle for Windows system-level tools and components, including design, implementation, testing, and integration.
- Design and develop Windows desktop/system utilities using C# / C++ (WPF or similar UI framework when needed) to collect and visualize low-level system telemetry.
- Access and integrate low-level Windows system data, including WMI, Win32 API, ETW, performance counters, and hardware information.
- Perform cross-layer debugging and root cause analysis across application, Windows OS, driver, and firmware layers.
- Conduct Windows performance and power analysis using WPA, WPR, ADK, and ETW trace data.
- Correlate user-mode and kernel-mode traces to identify issues impacting responsiveness, stability, and idle residency.
- Analyze Windows services, processes, drivers, and platform power behavior (S0ix/DRIPS, C-states, device power states).
- Investigate ACPI event flows, BIOS/firmware interactions, and platform power state transitions.
- Develop diagnostic tools, scripts, or automation to accelerate debugging and data collection.
- Lead issue triage, debug strategy definition, and technical investigation during product development.
- Collaborate with PMs, QA, firmware, and platform teams to clarify requirements and debug scope.
- Research unfamiliar Windows internals or platform behaviors and propose effective technical solutions.
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-structured code following best practices and design patterns.
- Perform sufficient self-testing and validation before delivery.
- Produce technical documentation and contribute to design and code reviews.
Required Knowledge & Skills
- Strong understanding of Windows internals, including:
- Process / thread model
- Windows services architecture
- Driver model
- Kernel vs user mode execution
- Windows power management architecture
- Experience with Windows system programming:
- System telemetry and performance counters
- Win32 API
- Registry
- WMI
- Practical experience with system-level debugging and trace analysis tools:
- WPA / WPR / ETW
- Windows ADK
- WinDbg
- Familiarity with ACPI and firmware/BIOS architecture, including:
- Device enumeration
- Power state transitions
- Platform event handling
- Proficiency in C++ and/or C# (both preferred).
- Experience developing system tools or diagnostic utilities on Windows.
- Solid understanding of software architecture and design patterns.
- Strong code quality mindset (readability, maintainability, testability).
- Familiar with source control workflows and development processes.
- Experience with unit testing, integration testing, or automation is a plus.
- Strong analytical and root-cause problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and drive technical investigations.
- Effective cross-team collaboration and communication skills.
- Good written and verbal English communication ability.
Preferred Qualifications (Plus)
- Experience debugging performance or power issues on Windows platforms.
- Experience correlating software, driver, and firmware behaviors.
- Experience building telemetry or performance analysis tools.
- Scripting ability (PowerShell / Python) for diagnostics and automation.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or above in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- Typically 10+ years experience in Windows system/software development.
- Proven experience in low-level debugging, system analysis, and cross-layer issue resolution.
- Demonstrated ability to clarify technical requirements and work independently while collaborating effectively with engineering teams.
