Job Description:
The Senior Controls Software Engineer is responsible for the design, development, implementation, and lifecycle management of software for industrial automation and control systems. This role involves developing PLC, HMI/SCADA, motion control, and industrial communication solutions while collaborating with cross-functional teams throughout the complete project lifecycle—from concept and design through commissioning and customer support.
The ideal candidate will possess strong expertise in PLC programming, HMI/SCADA development, industrial networking, and machine automation using Siemens, Beckhoff, Bosch Rexroth, B&R automation platforms or a combination of these automation platforms.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
· Design and develop machine control software for custom automation systems from concept through commissioning.
· Develop PLC, HMI/SCADA, motion control, safety, and industrial communication software.
· Configure and integrate servo drives, VFDs, robotics, vision systems, and field devices.
· Prepare Functional Design Specifications (FDS), I/O lists, software architecture, and technical documentation.
· Perform software testing, debugging, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), commissioning, and customer support.
· Collaborate with Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, and Project Engineering teams throughout the project lifecycle.
· Participate in the review of electrical designs, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and ensure compliance with customer specifications and applicable industry standards.
· Troubleshoot control systems and optimize machine performance.
· Participate in software code reviews and maintain software quality standards.
· Support continuous improvement initiatives, software standardization, and engineering best practices.
· Maintain project schedules and communicate technical progress to project stakeholders.
Requirements & Experience
· Minimum 8+ years of hands-on experience in industrial automation, controls development, and machine commissioning.
· Experience designing and implementing control systems for custom automation projects.
· Strong knowledge of PLC programming, HMI/SCADA development, and motion control.
· Experience integrating servo systems, drives, motors, robotics, sensors, and vision systems.
· Strong knowledge of industrial communication protocols including:
· Profinet
· EtherCAT
· Ethernet/IP
· Modbus TCP
· OPC UA
· Experience with Safety PLCs and machine safety devices.
· Strong troubleshooting and commissioning skills.
· Experience with software version control and software lifecycle management.
· Ability to prepare technical documentation including:
· Functional Design Specifications
· Software Architecture
· I/O Lists
· User Manuals
· Electrical Documentation
· Strong analytical, problem-solving, and customer communication skills.
· Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams).

Education
· Bachelor's Degree in one of the following disciplines:
· Electronics & Communication Engineering
· Instrumentation & Control Engineering
· Mechatronics Engineering
· Electrical Engineering
· Minimum 8+ years of relevant experience in industrial automation, controls development, and machine commissioning.
Key Result Areas:
· Configure automation hardware and software according to project specifications.
· Develop PLC and HMI applications for custom machine automation.
· Deliver reliable, maintainable, and scalable control software.
· Follow software change management procedures and maintain version control.
· Support FAT, SAT, machine commissioning, and production startup.
· Provide technical support during installation and post-deployment activities.
· Ensure compliance with engineering standards and customer requirements.
· Deliver assigned projects on time while maintaining quality and customer satisfaction.
Travel:
· Domestic and international travel may be required, up to 20%, depending on project requirements.
