About the Position

This position reports to the Safety Supervisor and is responsible for providing Industrial Hygiene expertise to all CAP Departments; developing related occupational health policies and supporting programs; managing these programs district-wide; monitoring employees (with appropriate instrumentation) to determine their level of exposure to various occupational health hazards (chemical, physical and biological); preparing written technical reports interpreting results and presenting specific conclusions regarding the potential impact on peoples' health and the environment; and developing strategies to reduce potential health risks. In addition, this position supports CAP's Safety Program by providing expertise and instruction to other members of CAP's Safety & Health Department.

About the Responsibilities

1. Provide technical and regulatory expertise concerning industrial hygiene, as well as certain environmental and safety issues. This includes troubleshooting occupational safety and health concerns; providing guidance in the development of safety plans during overhaul, maintenance and other work activities. Provide oversight and guidance during asbestos, lead, and other remediation activities. Provide training to employees on safety and health programs and the policies/practices that will minimize employee exposure and otherwise ensure employee health.

2. Develop, revise, implement, and continuously improve occupational health-related programs including Confined Space Entry, Bloodborne Pathogens, Hazard Communication, Silica Exposure Control, Hearing Conservation, Personal Protective Equipment, Heat Stress, and Heavy Metals Exposure Control.  Act as CAP's Respiratory Protection Program Administrator (RPPA) and Asbestos Remediation Program Administrator.

3. Conduct job and environmental risk assessments to identify potential exposures related to chemical, physical, and biological hazards.  This is done by studying work operations and processes and obtaining full details of the nature of the work, materials and equipment used, products and by-products, number of hours worked, etc., and performing field monitoring and laboratory testing and/or making specific calculations to quantify/estimate potential exposures. Once assessed, offer specific strategies to eliminate or reduce exposures and document findings and recommendations in technical reports, which are then used as the basis for corrective action plans and monitoring continuous improvement. Also conduct periodic safety surveys and area compliance audits as well as investigate incidents related to occupational health and safety.

4. Industrial Hygiene Equipment Maintenance:  Maintain all Industrial Hygiene Equipment in working order, ensuring proper calibration as required by the manufacturer. Maintain the inventory for all confined space air monitoring equipment and calibrate as necessary.
