This recruitment will establish an open eligible list that will be used to fill current and future Fleet Technician II positions. The eligible list established may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower classifications throughout the County of Orange.

OC PUBLIC WORKS
OC Public Works (OCPW) provides services on a regional basis to unincorporated areas, cities, and other County agencies and departments. The primary mission of the department is to protect and enrich the community through the sustainable delivery of projects and services. OC Public Works’ guiding principles are safety, integrity, quality, teamwork, and adaptability. 

OCPW is a unique County department comprised of ten (10) service areas: Administrative Services; Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights & Measures; OC Construction; OC Development Services; OC Environmental Resources; OC Fleet Services; OC Facilities Design & Construction; OC Facilities Maintenance; OC Infrastructure Programs; and OC Operations & Maintenance.

OC Fleet Services is seeking a skilled Collision Auto Body Technician II to perform journeyman-level work in repairing, modifying, and painting automobiles and heavy equipment exteriors and interiors, and to do other work as required.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Straighten and repair automobile and heavy equipment fenders, body panels, and metal surfaces; remove dents and weld tears in surfaces; fill rough areas, and grind and sand surfaces; repair and fabricate fiberglass and various metal parts and surfaces
• Sand and prime coats exterior and interior automobile and heavy equipment surfaces in preparation for finish painting
• Mix, match, and apply paint with spray gun
• Build, repair, or replace wood side boards and stakes on truck beds
• Disassemble and reassemble specialized equipment such as sirens, lights, mounts, and brackets, and make necessary wiring installations
• Repair and replace door hinges, locks, glass run channels, windows, windshields and various parts
• Repair and replace interior trim and upholstery
• Use various welding methods to modify and repair damaged vehicles and equipment.
• Install basic automotive wiring systems
• Fabricate from sheet metal modification to vehicles and heavy equipment to alter original configurations

 
The ideal candidate is an auto body professional with extensive experience repairing and restoring automobiles as part of a commercial, industrial or government fleet. Although not required, the certifications and training listed below are highly desirable:

• Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certified in Non- Structural Repairs (Bodywork) preferred or similar training and experience in non-structural repairs
• ASE Certified in Structural Repairs (Frame Repair) preferred or similar training or experience in structural repairs
• I-CAR Certified in Body/Frame repair preferred or similar training and experience in structural and non-structural repair

In addition, the successful candidate will possess the following core competencies:

• Knowledge of frame repairs and straightening on full frame vehicles and unibody vehicles
• Knowledge of Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding, Oxy-Acetylene Gas welding, Arc welding, Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding, and spot welding
• Knowledge of suspension components, interior components, and body components such as fenders, doors, core supports, etc.
• Ability to straighten sheet metal body components with hammers and dollies
• Ability to measure vehicles frames using centerline gauges, tram gauges, etc.
• Ability to apply plastic fillers (Bondo) and performing fiberglass repairs
• Performing body and fender work at the journey level to include repairing, modifying, and painting automobiles, trucks, and other equipment
• Setting up and operating various welding equipment to accomplish precision welding on various types of metals, which are characteristic of automobile/equipment repair work
• Working independently from written and oral instructions, diagrams, schematics, sketches, specifications, and rough drafts
• Using various manuals to look up and record information on replacement materials required in body and fender repair work
• Itemizing repair estimates by identifying the cost and parts necessary to repair damaged equipment
• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment of the trade and their use in the maintenance and repair of automotive, heavy equipment, and/or other mechanical equipment
• Knowledge of vehicle paint and refreshing

Oral & Written Communication

• Read, understand and follow written and oral instructions such as factory service bulletins, automotive, light truck, and/or heavy construction equipment manuals and memorandums
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of work
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing
• Complete order forms and other documents correctly
• Place orders orally in a clear, concise, and understandable manner

Eligible List
Once the assessment has been completed, HRS will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.
