Position Title: Director, Accounting and Financial Reporting
Status: Exempt, Full-Time
Salary: $115,000.00 - $140,000.00

Location: Primarily based out of our Denver office at 711 Park Ave W, Denver, CO 80205. 3 days/week in office, 2 days/week remote

In accordance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, the expected salary for this position is $115,000.00 - $140,000.00 annually. In an effort to increase equity and to avoid unfair bias historically associated with salary negotiations, we do not participate in salary negotiations outside of this stated starting salary range.

How You'll Help

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Accounting and Finance will be responsible for the direct management of several key accounting and reporting functions within the organization, including budgeting, planning, and forecasting; financial and regulatory reporting; internal controls and risk management; research and analysis; the procure-to-pay cycle; and compliance with contractual documents and government regulations. The Director of Accounting and Finance will also be involved in supporting the payroll, time & attendance, and employee benefits functions. The Director of Accounting and Finance will be involved in supporting presentations to the Board of Directors and Finance and Audit committees; assisting the Chief Financial Officer with treasury and cash management duties; and will serve as a member of the Leadership Team. The Director of Accounting and Finance will also lead, manage, coach and mentor a team of up to four staff members.

The Director of Accounting and Finance will ensure that the organization has the policies, procedures, internal controls, segregation of duties and systems in place to support effective program implementation and to ensure flawless audits. The Director of Accounting and Finance will work closely with program leaders and their staff, not only to educate them regarding finance procedures but also to explore how the finance function can support program operations. In addition, the Director of Accounting and Finance will partner with the CFO, senior leadership, and the human resources (HR) and information technology (IT) staff to enhance and better integrate finance, HR, and IT functions.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Monitor and analyze accounting data to ensure accurate and timely consolidated financial reporting and other relevant information for monthly interim reporting and annual financial audit, A-133 audit and IRS 990 filing.
  • Manage the forecasting and management of cash flow to ensure financial predictability and sustainability, within the objectives of the operating reserve policies.
  • Manage all aspects of the monthly financial accounting close process, including reconciliations, receivables, payables, accruals, and relevant journal entries.
  • Direct and lead the work of financial accounting team members, including mentoring staff members and assisting in job development and growth.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts monthly and clear reconciling items timely.
  • Analyze assigned complex programs including developing budgets, monitoring multiple sources of funding and matching requirements.
  • Lead the production of financial schedules, account analysis and other relevant information for audits and other financial reporting requirements.
  • Lead presentations and communications with the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Reconcile operating bank accounts, including preparation of journal entries and account reconciliations as well as ensuring adequate controls and cash management practices using appropriate third-party product offerings.
  • Actively recommend and implement improvements to department processes, reporting and/or software to improve functionality, increase efficiencies and enhance customer service.
  • Lead the adherence to, research of, and implementation of financial accounting objective.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a team.

What You'll Need: Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field required.
  • To be considered for this role, a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is preferred but not required.
  • 5+ years of broad finance and accounting experience (preferably in a nonprofit organization with a budget of at least $10 million), including hands-on experience in a complex non-profit organization that has multiple programs and a high volume of financial transactions.
  • Progressive leadership responsibilities overseeing accounting and finance professionals and staff.

Specials Skills/Knowledge:

  • Keen analytic, organization and critical thinking skills which allows for strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting.
  • A track record in managing government grants as it relates to compliance, accounting and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants.
  • Applied knowledge of non-profit accounting theory
  • Proficient in preparing spreadsheets, with excellent comprehension and reconciliation skills.
  • Experience with writing accounting processes, policies, and procedures.
  • Excellent written, oral, and strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Well-organized, strongly committed to accuracy, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and operate effectively under time and work volume pressure.
  • Ability to adapt to changing business needs in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently within a team environment.
  • Desire to give back to the community through commitment to Mile High United Way's mission.

Computer Skills:

  • Advanced Microsoft Office Suite, including strong Excel skills.
  • Computerized Accounting Software, experience required.

Working Environment: Typical office environment with occasional out-of-office meetings

Physical Activities: Ability to operate a computer for extended periods. The employee may be asked to lift up to 20lbs.
