Position: Site Superintendent

Status: Full time, temporary (2 years)

Location: John Rankin House (Ripley, OH) and U.S. Grant Visitor Center (Georgetown, OH)

Salary: $56,160 per year

Summary:

Manage daily on-site activities of the John Rankin House Historic Site and the U.S. Grant Visitor Center; serve as primary advocate for the site with OHC leadership. Supervise site operations and services independently while understanding the necessity for communication and coordinating work efforts with other areas of Ohio History Connection and partner organizations.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Provide engaged, inspired, professional leadership for the site including all aspects of its daily operation, interpretation, preservation, and maintenance.
  • Hire, train, and supervise site staff; facilitate employee development and empower staff to make decisions within a scope appropriate to their work. Maintain a high level of morale and provide direction.
  • Ensure all OHC policies and procedures are followed.
  • Work collaboratively with supervisor and board presidents of Ripley Heritage, Inc. and Land of U.S. Grant to establish priorities.
  • Oversee interpretation of the site to visitors and schools and assist with coordination of Tribal, scholarly/academic, or other stakeholder engagement with the site.
  • Ensure that site interpretation and educational programs align with approved plans, policies, and best practices;
  • Engage in community and public relations, in collaboration with OHC leadership, Marketing Department, and partner organizations;
  • Support and coordinate event and program planning;
  • Build and manage a volunteer corps;
  • Prepare and submit daily and monthly plans, reports, and records as required including facilities use plan, site preservation monitoring, visitation data, purchases, inventory and receipts of sales operation, etc.;
  • Supervise Visitor Services staff in growing and managing a retail component to the visitor experience;
  • Supervise contracted maintenance and grounds staff, ensuring appropriate grounds care, cleaning; communicating/coordinating with OHC Facilities Management about repairs and improvements and with OHC Security regarding site safety and security;
  • Coordinate with OHC Security to ensure safety and security of staff, visitors, and historic resources;
  • Attend all meetings and provide monthly written updates to the boards of Ripley Heritage, Inc. and the Land of U.S. Grant;
  • Other related duties as assigned.

 

Required Education & Experience:

A bachelor's degree in interpretation, park management, museum management or in a field related to the site plus three years of experience, or five plus years of experience in interpretation and management, or an equivalent combination of training and work experience.

With related supervisory, retail, community relations, and finance management experience, total five to ten years of experience.

 

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Training in park/site interpretation.
  • Skilled public presenter.
  • Experience managing staff teams.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft 360 software, Shopify and Quicken Books

Work Environment:

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings as needed.
  • Mix of indoor office and museum work and outdoor visitor interaction work.
  • Some travel required.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to tolerate cold, heat, and rain.
  • Able to lift typical office items and boxes weighing 25 pounds or less.
