Description

Putting people first, every day

BDO is a firm built on a foundation of positive relationships with our people and our clients. Each day, our professionals provide exceptional service, helping clients with advice and insight they can trust. In turn, we offer an award-winning environment that fosters a people-first culture with a high priority on your personal and professional growth.

Your Opportunity

BDO Canada's Indirect Tax practice is seeking a Mandarin-speaking Senior Manager to join our growing Customs and International Trade Services (CITS) team in Vancouver. This advisory-focused role will support complex tariff, origin, valuation, and trade remedy matters across a national client base. The successful candidate will work closely with a diverse client base, including organizations with Mandarin-speaking stakeholders, requiring professional fluency in both Mandarin and English.

Your Responsibilities

As part of BDO’s CITS team, you will:

  • Advise clients on surtax/tariff exposure, customs compliance, and trade strategy across Canadian and U.S. regimes
  • Analyze classification, valuation, origin, and trade remedy risks
  • Develop defensible technical positions and draft advisory memoranda
  • Lead and support clients through CBSA verifications, and dispute resolution matters
  • Design and implement customs compliance frameworks and internal controls
  • Communicate directly with clients and regulatory authorities
  • Collaborate with tax, transfer pricing, and cross-border teams across Canada
  • Contribute to practice development, knowledge management, and coaching of junior staff

This role involves both technical analysis and client-facing advisory responsibilities.

How do we define success for your role?

  • You demonstrate BDO's core values through all aspects of your work: Integrity, Respect and Collaboration
  • You understand your clients’ industry, challenges, and opportunities; clients describe you as positive, professional, and delivering high quality work
  • You identify, recommend, and are focused on effective service delivery to your clients
  • You share in an inclusive and engaging work environment that develops, retains and attracts talent
  • You actively participate in the adoption of digital tools and strategies to drive an innovative workplace
  • You grow your expertise through learning and professional development

Your Experience and Qualifications

  • University or college degree/diploma in a Customs and International Trade discipline
  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in customs advisory, international trade compliance, or regulatory dispute resolution
  • Professional fluency in Mandarin and English, with the ability to communicate complex technical customs and trade matters both verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated experience handling customs issue resolution and verifications
  • Experience at a professional services firm, CBSA, or in-house global trade function is a strong asset
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • Tariff classification and valuation principles
    • FTA Rules of origin
    • Canadian surtaxes and trade remedy measures
  • Proven ability to draft technical memoranda and regulatory submissions
  • Strong analytical capabilities and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple client engagements with competing deadlines

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate:

  • Thinks analytically and approaches issues from a risk and defensibility perspective
  • Is comfortable navigating ambiguity in evolving trade policy environments
  • Can engage directly with clients and regulators
  • Is interested in developing into a senior advisory role within a growing national practice

The expected salary for this role is between $125,000 - $175,000
